UAE Police Help Child Reach Chemotherapy After Family Stuck in Rain Traffic for 3 Hours
A swift response by UAE emergency services turned a distressing journey into a moment of relief after an expat family, stranded in heavy rain-related traffic for more than three hours, was assisted in getting their child to a critical chemotherapy session on time.
The family was travelling from Dubai to Sharjah on Monday when severe traffic congestion, worsened by heavy rains and post-Eid al-Fitr traffic, brought their journey to a near standstill.
According to Lamiaa Abdelaal, an Egyptian expatriate residing in the UAE, what started as a routine hospital visit soon turned into a race against time.
“Today was my son’s chemotherapy session appointment at Burjeel Hospital in Sharjah after the illness returned once again,” she shared in a post on X.
As the delay continued, the child’s condition reportedly began to worsen.
“Under heavy rains and the traffic of the first day of work after Eid, we were stuck on the road between Dubai and Sharjah for more than three hours, and my son’s blood-sugar level began to drop,” she said.
With the situation becoming increasingly urgent, the family sought immediate assistance. Lamiaa said her husband contacted a police patrol, prompting an immediate response.
Emergency teams quickly coordinated efforts, dispatching an ambulance to transport the child while police patrols escorted the family’s vehicle through the traffic, clearing the route to ensure they reached the hospital without further delay.
“They didn’t leave him alone for a moment,” Lamiaa said, describing how the ambulance carried her son while police vehicles cleared the road for the family all the way to the hospital.
The timely intervention ensured that the child was able to receive his scheduled chemotherapy treatment.
The incident has since resonated widely across social media, where many users praised the professionalism, compassion, and rapid response of UAE emergency services.
Prof Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of the Burjeel Cancer Institute and the doctor overseeing the child’s treatment, also commended the response.
“We thank the ambulance teams and Sharjah Police, who have always been a shining example in their swift response and humanity toward all citizens and residents,” he said, while wishing the child a full recovery.
For the family, the experience left a lasting impression.
“What began as a moment of panic ended with reassurance and gratitude,” Lamiaa said, adding that the UAE continues to be a country that places humanity and safety above all else.
