Egyptian–UAE Partnership Launches 365 MW Gas Power Project in Mauritania 4

A major gas-to-power project aimed at strengthening energy security in Mauritania has been launched following the signing of a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) between MADKOUR Holding and GoGas Holding.

The agreement was signed during a high-level ceremony in Cairo, reflecting growing economic cooperation between Egypt, the Gulf region and Africa.

The project will involve the construction of a combined-cycle power generation plant in Nouakchott, powered by natural gas from the offshore BandaTevet Gas Field.

Power Capacity to Reach 365 MW

The development will be implemented in phases, with the first stage expected to begin electricity generation by the end of 2028.

  1. Initial capacity: 200 megawatts (MW)

  2. Final capacity: Up to 365 MW

The facility will be the first project in Mauritania designed to generate electricity using locally produced gas, supporting the country’s efforts to expand its domestic energy supply.

Officials say the project will also strengthen Mauritania’s integration with the West African Power Pool, helping improve cross-border electricity connectivity across the region.

High-Level Leadership Participation

The ceremony was attended by several senior industry leaders, including:

  1. Tarek El Molla

  2. Mostafa Madkour

  3. Khaled Abu Bakr

  4. Tawfik Diab

  5. Adham Alkady

The agreement was formally signed by Adham Alkady and Heba Ayad.

During the event, Mostafa Madkour presented a Strategic Partnership Trophy to Tarek El Molla and Khaled Abu Bakr, recognising their roles in advancing energy cooperation and industrial development across Africa.

Strengthening Energy Integration in Africa

Speaking at the ceremony, Tarek El Molla said the project represents a key step toward regional energy integration, transforming Mauritania’s natural gas resources into sustainable power.

“This collaboration represents a vital bridge for energy integration in the region,” he said, noting that the project will support both Mauritania’s domestic energy needs and the wider West African market.

Mostafa Madkour highlighted the broader development impact of the initiative, describing it as part of the company’s commitment to supporting African governments with sustainable infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, Khaled Abu Bakr, who also serves as Vice President of the International Gas Union, said the partnership demonstrates the strength of Egyptian industrial collaboration in delivering large-scale energy solutions.

Supporting Mauritania’s Energy Transformation

The project is expected to play a key role in expanding Mauritania’s national electricity grid, while helping transform the country’s energy sector by utilising domestic gas resources.

By linking natural gas production with electricity generation, the development aims to provide reliable, efficient and cleaner energy to support economic and social development.

Officials say the project also reinforces Mauritania’s ambition to become a strategic energy player in West Africa, supporting regional electricity trade and strengthening supply stability across the region.
