Dubai RTA to Install Motion-Sensor LED Lighting on 30 Pedestrian Bridges

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a project to upgrade lighting across 30 pedestrian bridges in the emirate by installing smart, motion-sensor LED systems aimed at improving pedestrian safety while reducing energy consumption.

The initiative forms part of the RTA's People Happiness Programme, which seeks to enhance mobility by creating safer, more comfortable experiences for road users. The project also supports Dubai's broader sustainability agenda by promoting energy efficiency and smarter use of public infrastructure.

Smart Lighting for Safer Crossings

Under the project, all 30 pedestrian bridges will be equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting integrated with motion-sensor technology. The system will automatically activate when pedestrians are detected on a bridge, ensuring adequate illumination only when needed.

The smart lighting solution is expected to improve nighttime safety while lowering electricity consumption, operational costs and environmental impact.

Detailed Site Assessments

Before commencing the upgrades, RTA conducted comprehensive site surveys and technical assessments across all 30 bridge locations.

Engineers evaluated the condition of each bridge and used specialised light meters to measure existing illumination levels, enabling the authority to determine the lighting requirements for every site and ensure compliance with approved lighting standards.

Project Rollout Underway

The project is being implemented in phases, with work on the first 21 pedestrian bridges already in progress.

According to the RTA, the remaining bridges will be upgraded during subsequent phases, with the entire project scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Supporting Dubai's Sustainability Goals

The authority said the initiative aligns with its long-term strategy to modernise road infrastructure through environmentally friendly technologies suited to Dubai's climate.

By adopting smart lighting systems, the RTA aims to reduce energy consumption, improve operational efficiency and contribute to Dubai's vision of becoming a global leader in sustainable urban development and the green economy.

The authority added that it will continue implementing advanced lighting technologies across the emirate's transport infrastructure to enhance public safety while supporting environmental sustainability.
