Zayed International Airport Landscaping Project Sets Benchmark for Sustainable Design in the UAE
The Zayed International Airport’s landscaping project is redefining sustainable infrastructure by integrating cutting-edge environmental practices. Managed by Dorsch Global, the project demonstrates how large-scale developments can harmonize with ecological responsibility while meeting operational demands.
Spanning 480,000 square meters of meticulously designed green spaces, the initiative enhances Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a leader in sustainable development. By prioritizing water conservation, biodiversity, and renewable energy, the project establishes a new standard for eco-friendly infrastructure in the Middle East.
Khaled Abbas, Regional Director of Landscape and Client Relationship at Dorsch Abu Dhabi, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “This project is more than just a development – it’s a symbol of our commitment to innovation and sustainability. By using local resources and innovative technology, we’ve set a new standard for green infrastructure in the Middle East.”
Sustainability at the Core
The landscaping project focuses on water conservation through the use of native and local plants, significantly reducing water dependency while enhancing biodiversity. Integrated solar power systems further reinforce its commitment to sustainability by minimizing energy consumption.
One of the project's key achievements is a 50% reduction in water usage, enabled by the incorporation of volcanic soil sourced from Hungary, which retains moisture more efficiently. Unlike conventional projects, it does not rely on groundwater aquifers, preserving these resources for future generations.
To address the challenges posed by the site’s proximity to the sea—such as high-water tables and underground cavities—the project integrated retaining walls with plantation features. These solutions ensured safety, aesthetics, and sustainability without compromise.
A Model for the Future
The Abu Dhabi New Airport Landscaping Project also features 18-meter-high sand dunes, blending aesthetic appeal with functional design. This innovative approach enhances biodiversity while reducing water consumption, creating a climate-resilient landscape that serves as a blueprint for future developments in arid regions.
Collaboration between Dorsch and its clients played a pivotal role in the project's success. “Clients appreciate when their needs are prioritized over profits. By focusing on best practices and innovation, we were able to achieve their goals while staying true to our sustainability mission,” Abbas added.
Setting a Global Precedent
By incorporating renewable energy, smart irrigation systems, and sustainable materials, the project addresses the region’s extreme weather challenges and water scarcity concerns. It exemplifies the growing emphasis on sustainability shaping the future of landscape design in the UAE and beyond.
“This initiative is not just a milestone—it represents a commitment to advancing sustainable development across the region,” Abbas noted. “Dorsch’s approach to sustainability is grounded in continuous innovation, ensuring our projects anticipate future challenges while meeting present needs.”
