Siemens, UAE ministry launch Emirates Monitoring Center to strengthen national power grid
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has inaugurated the Emirates Monitoring Center, the UAE's first national facility for real-time monitoring of the country's integrated electricity network, in partnership with Siemens. The center connects all four of the nation's electricity utilities, marking a major step in strengthening the resilience, reliability and digital transformation of the UAE's power sector.
Powered by Siemens' Spectrum Power platform, the facility links Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) and Etihad Water and Electricity, providing a unified, real-time view of the country's electricity network.
The Emirates Monitoring Center oversees the UAE's national power system, which has an installed generation capacity of approximately 48 gigawatts. It continuously tracks key operational indicators, including system load, frequency, voltage and power exchange, while ensuring the seamless exchange of operational data across the Emirates National Grid (ENG) corridor extending from Abu Dhabi to the Northern Emirates.
The center also serves as the primary hub for outage management and emergency response, providing situational awareness during system disturbances and generation outages. In addition, it conducts operational planning and resilience studies to improve network reliability and support informed decision-making in collaboration with EWEC, DEWA, SEWA and Etihad Water and Electricity.
His Excellency Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said the center represents the core of the UAE's national electricity network by delivering comprehensive, real-time visibility through advanced monitoring technologies developed by Siemens.
He added that the facility will strengthen the resilience of the country's energy infrastructure while enhancing its ability to anticipate, manage and respond to operational challenges. The center will also leverage artificial intelligence to support scenario planning, predictive analysis and future system modelling, enabling smarter and more proactive decision-making.
Helmut von Struve, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens in the UAE and the Middle East, described the inauguration as a landmark achievement for the country's energy sector.
He said the Emirates Monitoring Center is the UAE's first unified platform offering a single, real-time view of the national power grid while continuously monitoring all four electricity utilities across the seven emirates.
Von Struve added that Siemens delivered the core monitoring and control platform at record speed through what he described as the world's first fast-track deployment of the latest generation of the company's energy management system. He noted that the center has been designed to evolve alongside the UAE's changing energy landscape, supporting renewable energy integration, future cross-border electricity interconnections and the continued development of a smarter and more resilient national grid
