UAE to Use AI-Powered Drones for Ramadan Moon Sighting in World-First Initiative

The UAE Council for Fatwa has announced that the country will become the first in the world to use artificial intelligence (AI)-equipped drones for the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon. This innovative approach aims to enhance the accuracy of moon sighting while maintaining the traditional practice of direct observation.

Advanced Moon Sighting with AI Drones

The council emphasized that the use of drones will serve as an extension of direct vision, which remains the primary method for confirming the sighting of the crescent. The initiative aligns with the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) guidance, which states:
"Do not fast until you see the crescent moon, and do not break your fast until you see it. If it is obscured from you, estimate it."

In addition to naked-eye observation, the moon sighting process will incorporate data from astronomical observatories and advanced telescopic equipment across the UAE. These technologies work in collaboration with national institutions and specialized centers to ensure precision in determining the start of Ramadan.

Ramadan 2025 Start Date Prediction

The UAE has called on all Muslims to observe the crescent moon on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025. This corresponds to 29 Shaban in the Umm Al Qura calendar, which is used to determine Islamic dates.

  • If the crescent is sighted after Maghrib prayer, Ramadan 2025 will begin on March 1.
  • If not sighted, the holy month will commence on March 2.

The International Astronomy Centre in the UAE has predicted that Ramadan is likely to begin on March 1.

Ramadan Working Hours Announced

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources has confirmed the official working hours for government employees during Ramadan. Additionally, private sector employees will have their daily working hours reduced by two hours throughout the holy month.

Regional Moon Sighting Efforts

Saudi Arabia has also called upon all Muslims in the Kingdom to participate in moon sighting on February 28.

The UAE continues to lead in technological advancements in Islamic traditions, ensuring that religious practices align with scientific accuracy and innovation.
