UAE Moonsighting Committee Confirms Start of Ramadan 2025

Historic First as AI-Powered Drones Assist in Moon Sighting

The UAE’s moonsighting committee has officially announced that Saturday, March 1, 2025, will mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan 1446 Hijri, with today, Friday, February 28, being the last day of Sha’ban.

For the first time in history, the UAE has deployed artificial intelligence (AI)-powered drones to aid in the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon. This technological advancement is aimed at improving the accuracy and efficiency of moon sighting, a practice deeply rooted in Islamic tradition.

Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is regarded as the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. It is during this time that the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) on Laylat Al Qadr, one of the most spiritually significant nights, occurring in the last ten days of Ramadan.

During Ramadan, Muslims who are physically able observe fasting from dawn to dusk, refraining from eating and drinking. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, emphasizing self-discipline, reflection, and devotion.

Adjusted Working Hours During Ramadan

The UAE government has announced reduced working hours for both public and private sector employees during the holy month to accommodate fasting schedules.

Public Sector

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has issued a directive confirming the official working hours for federal ministries and authorities during Ramadan:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Friday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

FAHR has also permitted flexible and remote working options, with up to 70% of government employees allowed to work remotely on Fridays.

Private Sector

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has mandated a two-hour reduction in daily working hours for private sector employees.

Companies may implement flexible or remote work arrangements, provided they adhere to the daily working hour limits outlined in Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on Labour Relations.

Conclusion

The UAE’s innovative approach to moon sighting marks a significant milestone in integrating technology with religious traditions. With Ramadan officially commencing on March 1, 2025, residents can look forward to a spiritually enriching month, supported by flexible work arrangements and government initiatives to ease the fasting experience.
