Dubai Road Naming Committee Launches Public Platform for Naming Streets

The Dubai Road Naming Committee, under the supervision of Dubai Municipality, has unveiled the Street Designation Proposal platform, inviting public participation in naming roads and streets across Dubai. This initiative aims to preserve the emirate's heritage, promote its cultural and social values, and align with Dubai’s future growth and achievements.

The platform allows residents and visitors to suggest names that reflect Dubai's national identity and historical narratives. It underscores the Committee’s commitment to involving the community in reviving and highlighting heritage meanings and designations.

H.E. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, emphasized the platform's significance: “The platform showcases our efforts in reviving national meanings and nomenclature of Dubai, further serving as a testament to its history, values, cultural, civilizational, and social wealth and consistent with its future growth. It allows the public to participate in proposing names for roads and streets that reflect our national identity and tell stories of our past.”

The platform supports a structured approach to naming, based on classifications that include Arabic and Islamic architecture, art, culture, poetry, natural phenomena, local flora and fauna, environmental sustainability, historical sites, and professions. This method aims to create a cohesive identity that connects Dubai's past, present, and future.

In its trial phase, the Committee has already completed naming roads in the Al-Khawaneej 2 area, using names inspired by local trees and plants, such as Ghaf, Sidr, Reehan, Faghi, Samer, and Shareesh.

Established by Executive Council Resolution No. (35) of 2021, the Dubai Road Naming Committee includes key figures such as the Director General of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, CEO of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, and four experienced Dubai citizens. The Committee follows specific criteria to ensure that road names reflect Dubai’s rich history, heritage, and cultural values.
