Yusra Mardini to Return to Syria Following Assad Regime's Fall

A decade after fleeing her war-torn homeland, Olympic swimmer and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Yusra Mardini has announced her plans to return to Syria. Her decision follows the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s history.

In 2015, Yusra and her sister Sara made global headlines for their heroic efforts in pulling a refugee boat for miles after its engine failed during their journey from Syria to Europe. Their path led Yusra to Berlin, where her swimming talents earned her a spot on the inaugural Refugee Olympic Team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

An Emotional Return

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Yusra expressed her overwhelming emotions upon learning of Syria's liberation while on a flight from Los Angeles to Berlin.
"There was so much joy, loss, and anger all at once," she said, reflecting on the immense suffering endured by her people. Her return is driven by a deep love for her homeland and a commitment to rebuilding it.
"I need to go back to show the world what’s happening and remind Syrians that we have a future to build,” Yusra explained.

Despite her mother’s concerns for her safety, Yusra remains resolute. She plans to visit her extended family in Damascus and witness the aftermath of the war firsthand.
"Seeing our destroyed home will be emotional, but people need to understand the urgency of rebuilding and healing as a nation," she emphasized.

A Voice for Refugees

Yusra’s journey from a war survivor to an international advocate has inspired millions. Her memoir Butterfly and the Netflix film The Swimmers recount her incredible story of resilience. Named one of TIME magazine’s most influential people in 2023, Yusra continues to advocate for refugees through her foundation, which focuses on education and sports opportunities for displaced individuals.

Currently studying cinema and media in Los Angeles, Yusra envisions a future where she uses storytelling to shed light on the realities of war and survival.
"I want to create films that inspire hope and show that even after destruction, we can rebuild," she shared.

A Call for Perseverance

Speaking at the 1Billion Followers Summit in Dubai on January 12, Yusra encouraged young people to embrace courage and consistency despite criticism.
"There will always be criticism, but you can’t let that stop you. Keep going and never be afraid to stand out,” she advised.

As Yusra prepares to return to Syria, her determination underscores her belief in the resilience of her people.
"This is just the beginning. I want to be part of rebuilding my country. Syrians deserve dignity, safety, and hope," she declared.
