UAE Pavilion Highlights Clean Energy Initiatives Ahead of International Clean Energy Day at WEF 2025

The UAE Pavilion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 hosted a high-level panel discussion titled “Clean Energy: The Best Path to Protecting the Planet,” bringing together global sustainability leaders and energy experts. The event, held in the lead-up to International Clean Energy Day on January 26, underscored the critical role of clean energy in combating climate change and shaping a sustainable future.

The panel explored strategies to accelerate the global energy transition, focusing on ambitious targets such as tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. Experts emphasized the importance of technological innovation, policy reform, and strategic financing, while highlighting the need for collaboration among governments, private stakeholders, and international organizations to overcome barriers to clean energy adoption.

Calls for Global Action

Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), praised the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy, stating:
“I thank the UAE for its steadfast partnership in accelerating the global energy transition. As we celebrate International Clean Energy Day, which coincides with the anniversary of IRENA’s founding, we are reminded of renewable energy’s potential to combat climate change, foster development, and build a cleaner future. However, challenges persist, particularly in the Global South, where structural and regulatory barriers hinder progress. Urgent action is required to address these gaps and significantly increase investment in clean energy.”

His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), highlighted nuclear energy’s role in decarbonizing energy grids:
“Nuclear energy is increasingly seen as a vital solution for the electrification transition. It offers clean, reliable electricity and strengthens energy security. The UAE has demonstrated this through the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, which generates a quarter of the nation’s energy needs without carbon emissions. This achievement reflects our commitment to a sustainable future.”

Leadership in Sustainability

Her Excellency Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, Permanent Representative of the UAE to IRENA, emphasized the role of partnerships in advancing clean energy solutions:
“Collaboration and knowledge sharing are the driving forces behind the global energy transition. By fostering meaningful partnerships and embracing diverse perspectives, we can unlock the potential of clean energy solutions, making them more accessible and transformative for communities worldwide. The UAE is proud to lead these efforts.”

UAE’s Global Commitment

As the host of IRENA and a key supporter of the UN’s International Clean Energy Day initiative, the UAE has positioned itself at the forefront of global sustainability efforts. During COP28, held in the UAE, 198 international parties agreed on ambitious energy goals, further solidifying the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy and climate action.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from the UAE to advance renewable energy initiatives and promote global climate action, aligning with its vision for a sustainable future.
