UAE Identifies Nine Globally Significant Key Biodiversity Areas
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has announced the designation of nine globally significant Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in the UAE, marking a significant milestone in the country's Year of Sustainability. These areas, approved by the Key Biodiversity Areas Secretariat, are of strategic biological importance globally and host numerous endangered plants and animals.
This project, reviewed by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, during a World Environment Day meeting, highlights the UAE's commitment to sustainability and biodiversity conservation. His Highness discussed the initiative with young leaders and entrepreneurs who presented pioneering environmental projects aligned with the UAE's sustainability goals.
The nine KBAs identified are:
- Arabian Oryx Protected Area, Abu Dhabi
- Marawah Marine Area, Abu Dhabi
- Al Yasat Marine Area, Abu Dhabi
- Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, Dubai
- Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
- Wadi Al-Helo, Sharjah
- Khor Fakkan and Shark Island, Sharjah
- Wadi Al-Bih, Ras Al Khaimah
- Siniyah Island and Khor Al Beidah, Umm Al Quwain
These areas hold biological significance and are home to endangered species like the Arabian Gazelle, Arabian Sand Gazelle, Arabian Oryx, and Dugong. Notably, these are the first KBAs identified for these species globally, and the UAE now hosts the largest number of Arabian oryx in the world.
Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, stated: “The designation of these nine key biodiversity areas underscores the UAE’s global leadership in sustainability and biodiversity conservation. This initiative, part of the UAE's efforts during the Year of Sustainability, reflects our commitment to protecting endangered species and preserving natural habitats.”
Key Highlights:
- Arabian Oryx and Gazelle: The Arabian Oryx Protected Area in Abu Dhabi and Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve in Dubai are crucial for the survival of these species.
- Dugong: Marawah Marine Area and Al Yasat Marine Area are the first globally significant KBAs for Dugong in the Middle East.
- Geckos: Three KBAs for endemic gecko species have been identified, marking the first for reptiles in the UAE.
This achievement was made possible through collaboration between MOCCAE, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the dedicated efforts of 75 national and resident experts. The project aligns with global standards for KBA identification and has been officially published in the World Database of Key Biodiversity Areas.
Environmental Impact:
- Protected Areas: Five of the KBAs are fully protected, significantly increasing the mean protected area for terrestrial and marine sites important to biodiversity.
- Ecological Benefits: These KBAs support ecological balance, provide essential natural resources, and contribute to environmental conservation efforts such as air and water purification, soil quality improvement, and carbon storage.
Conclusion: The UAE’s identification of these nine KBAs represents a pioneering effort in biodiversity conservation, highlighting the importance of collaborative action to protect and sustain natural habitats for future generations. The initiative is a testament to the UAE’s strategic vision for sustainability and environmental stewardship.
