Ramadan Begins in UAE: Anticipation Builds for 3 or 4-Day Eid Al Fitr Break

The holy month of Ramadan has officially begun in the UAE, with fasting commencing on February 18, ushering in a period of reflection, faith, and community. As residents across the Emirates adjust to the tranquil rhythm of Ramadan 2026, attention is already turning to the Eid Al Fitr holiday that will follow—a festive break expected to last three or four days, depending on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon.

According to the UAE public holiday calendar, Eid Al Fitr is expected to begin on Friday, March 20, corresponding to Shawwal 1, and continue until Sunday, March 22—offering residents a three-day weekend to mark the end of the fasting month.

Possible Four-Day Eid Break

If the crescent of Shawwal is sighted on March 18, Eid will commence the following day, Thursday, March 19, granting UAE residents a four-day break from March 19 to 22, with Sunday being part of the official weekend.
If not, Ramadan will extend to 30 days, and Eid will begin on Friday, March 20, resulting in a three-day break.

Maximizing the Holiday

Residents planning ahead can extend their time off to a total of nine days by combining the official Eid break with annual leave from Monday to Thursday, March 16–19. This would allow for a continuous holiday from Saturday, March 14, through Sunday, March 22, blending the spirit of Eid with a well-deserved rest.

The Atmosphere Across the Emirates

As the nation settles into the holy month, daily life gently shifts—cafés open later, work schedules adjust, and the evenings come alive with community iftars and family gatherings. Tailors have already stopped taking new orders for Eid attire, retailers are restocking festive goods, and streets are adorned with Ramadan lights, signaling the approach of celebration even before the crescent of Shawwal is seen.

Ramadan remains one of the most significant times of the year in the UAE, fostering unity, charity, and spiritual renewal. As the fasting month begins, anticipation for Eid Al Fitr 2026 grows, promising days of joy, family reunions, and gratitude marking the end of a sacred season.
