Masdar Secures 2GW in Saudi Arabia with Najran and Jizan Solar Projects to Advance Kingdom’s Clean Energy Vision

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar), one of the world’s leading clean energy companies, has been awarded two major solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in Saudi Arabia — the 1,400MW Najran and 600MW Ad Darb (Jizan) plants — under the sixth round of the Kingdom’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The combined 2-gigawatt (GW) capacity reinforces Masdar’s leadership in advancing renewable energy development across the Gulf.

Both projects will be developed on a build, own, and operate (BOO) basis, following the signing of a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), the Kingdom’s Principal Buyer responsible for managing power generation tenders and agreements. The Ad Darb project in Jizan Province is expected to commence operations in late 2027, while the Najran project is slated for the first half of 2028.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, said:

“Masdar is proud to support Saudi Arabia in achieving its Vision 2030 renewable energy targets. Securing the Najran and Ad Darb projects marks a significant milestone in our Saudi portfolio and reflects our deep regional expertise and long-standing commitment to sustainable development. These projects will play a key role in driving the Kingdom’s clean energy transition and sustainable economic growth.”

With this latest achievement, Masdar continues to strengthen its presence in Saudi Arabia, having already secured the largest cumulative capacity in SPPC’s competitive bids for three consecutive years. The company’s other projects in the Kingdom include the 1,100MW Al Henakiyah Solar PV plant, scheduled to begin operations in 2026, and the 2,000MW Al Sadawi Solar Project, expected to start in 2027.

Masdar’s operational assets in Saudi Arabia also feature the 300MW Jeddah Solar Power Plant and the 400MW Dumat Al Jandal Wind Farm — the Kingdom’s first wind project and the largest in the Middle East.

To date, SPPC has awarded 43.2GW of total capacity under the NREP, of which 12.3GW is already connected to the national grid. The latest awards to Masdar underscore the UAE company’s role as a key partner in Saudi Arabia’s clean energy roadmap, supporting the Kingdom’s ambition to derive 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Founded in 2006, Masdar has grown into a global clean energy powerhouse, with a 51GW renewable portfolio spanning more than 40 countries. With an ambitious target to reach 100GW of capacity by 2030, Masdar remains committed to expanding its footprint across key renewable markets, driving the global transition to sustainable energy.
