Major Expansion of Emirates Road to Cut Travel Time by 45%

In a significant move to improve inter-emirate connectivity and ease congestion, the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has announced a Dh750 million enhancement project for the Emirates Road. The major expansion aims to reduce travel time by up to 45% between Dubai and northern Emirates, including Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah.

The strategic development will commence in September 2025 and is scheduled for completion within two years. The project will focus on widening the highway — one of the most critical federal roads in the country — from three to five lanes in each direction.

Project Highlights

  • Total Investment: Dh750 million

  • Start Date: September 2025

  • Duration: Two years

  • Scope: Expand Emirates Road from 3 to 5 lanes each way

  • Target Area: Segment between Al Badee Interchange (Sharjah) and Umm Al Quwain

  • Objective: Reduce travel time by 45% and alleviate congestion

The expansion will increase the road’s capacity by 65%, allowing it to handle up to 9,000 vehicles per hour in each direction, up from the current 5,400 vehicles. The affected segment is among the busiest corridors in the UAE’s road network, especially during peak commuting hours.

Officials emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader infrastructure strategy to boost economic mobility, support population growth, and enhance quality of life for residents and travelers across the Emirates.
