Hillier Takes One-Shot Lead Into Final Day of Dubai Desert Classic
26-Year-Old Seeks Second DP World Tour Title Following Breakthrough British Masters Victory
New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier is poised to secure his second DP World Tour title as he heads into the final round of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic with a one-shot lead. The 26-year-old showcased his resilience at the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis Course on Saturday, finishing with a two-under-par 70 despite challenges midway through his round.
Hillier began the day in stellar form, recording three birdies in his first five holes to build a four-shot lead. However, a series of three consecutive bogeys starting from the 13th hole opened the door for England’s Tyrrell Hatton, who posted a four-under-par 68 to set a clubhouse target at 12 under.
In the critical closing moments, Hillier bounced back with a birdie from six feet on the 17th hole. He then narrowly avoided water on the 18th hole, setting up a routine up-and-down to secure his lead at 13 under.
Speaking after his round, Hillier said, “It was a grind. I figured it was going to be tough with all that wind, but I enjoyed it out there. I’ll have a crack at it tomorrow. It would be life-changing to win. Last year was tough, but I’ve reset and I’m feeling refreshed and excited for the final day.”
Hatton in Pursuit of Record
Seven-time DP World Tour winner Tyrrell Hatton remains a formidable contender, aiming to equal Jon Rahm’s record of five Rolex Series titles. Reflecting on the prestige of the event, Hatton said, “It’s an iconic event on the DP World Tour, one that every player aspires to win. I’ll give it my best tomorrow and see how things unfold.”
Tight Competition Among Chasers
Overnight leader Ewen Ferguson struggled to maintain his momentum, carding a two-over-par 74 to drop to third place at 10 under. England’s Laurie Canter and New Zealand’s Ryan Fox are tied for fourth at nine under, adding depth to the competition heading into Sunday.
A Chance for Redemption
Hillier’s quest for his first Rolex Series victory comes after a challenging 2023 season, during which he claimed his maiden DP World Tour title at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo. With renewed focus and confidence, Hillier is determined to make the most of his opportunity on Sunday.
The Hero Dubai Desert Classic, a marquee event on the DP World Tour, promises an electrifying finale as top golfers vie for the prestigious title.
