HBMSU explores global AI and digital education models during Arizona State University visit

Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University has strengthened its global engagement in artificial intelligence and digital education through a strategic visit to Arizona State University, one of the world’s leading institutions in innovation-driven higher education.

The high-level delegation was led by Dr. Mansoor Al Awar and included senior academic and administrative leaders. The visit aimed to explore institutional collaboration, while gaining insights into advanced global practices in AI, digital learning, and educational innovation.

Focus on future-ready education

Discussions centred on developing new initiatives at HBMSU, including the School of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and the Global Academy for Commodities. These efforts align with the UAE’s ambition to build a knowledge-based economy powered by advanced technologies.

The delegation also examined ways to enhance smart learning models, ensuring education systems remain flexible, scalable, and aligned with evolving labour market demands.

High-level academic engagement

During the visit, HBMSU officials held meetings with Michael Crow and Chris Howard, discussing collaboration in AI, lifelong learning, and digital transformation in higher education.

Key sessions were also conducted with specialised ASU units, including:

  1. EdPlus – focused on large-scale digital learning models
  2. Knowledge Enterprise – driving applied research and innovation
  3. Enterprise Technology – managing advanced digital infrastructure

These engagements provided insights into how technology can scale education while maintaining quality and sustainability.

Innovation ecosystems and industry collaboration

The delegation explored ASU’s broader innovation ecosystem, visiting the Thunderbird School of Global Management and the SkySong Innovation Hub, which hosts startups and research centres.

The discussions highlighted the importance of university-industry collaboration in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as the role of work-integrated learning (WIL) and stackable credential programmes in preparing students for future careers.

Showcasing HBMSU’s learning model

HBMSU presented its stackable credentials framework, which allows learners to combine professional certifications with academic degrees in a flexible, lifelong learning pathway. The model received positive feedback from ASU officials for its strong alignment with labour market needs.

Dr. Mansoor Al Awar emphasised that the visit reflects HBMSU’s commitment to building global knowledge partnerships and advancing a smart learning ecosystem powered by AI.

He noted that artificial intelligence is a key driver in reshaping higher education, enabling more personalised, flexible, and innovation-focused learning experiences.

Strengthening global positioning

The visit forms part of HBMSU’s broader strategy to expand its international academic network, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a global hub for digital education and knowledge innovation.
