Four Seasons Maldives Celebrates 25 Years of Career Development Program with Over 1,000 Graduates
Four Seasons Resorts Maldives has celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Career Development Program (CDP), marking a major milestone in the initiative’s history as the total number of graduates surpassed 1,000 Maldivian citizens.
The silver jubilee celebration took place on April 18, 2026, at the Maldives National University Hall in Malé, commemorating 25 years since the first five trainees graduated from the program in 2001. Today, the initiative has produced 1,058 graduates, making it the longest-running hospitality-focused professional development program in the Indian Ocean region.
The event was attended by Dr. Aisha Shahinaz Adam, Vice-Chancellor of Maldives National University, alongside graduates, industry leaders, and education stakeholders.
During the ceremony, 77 young Maldivians from the Class of 2026 graduated from the program, while 84 new trainees were welcomed into the Class of 2027. Selected from more than 300 applicants representing 28 islands across 15 atolls, the new cohort will undertake a year-long journey combining structured vocational training with hands-on experience rooted in Four Seasons’ hospitality philosophy.
In addition, 19 graduates from the 2026 class will continue their professional development through second- and third-year training opportunities in reception, reservations, engineering, and maritime-related disciplines.
From Five Students to More Than 1,000 Graduates
The program originated in 2001 from a simple yet ambitious vision at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. Faced with a shortage of qualified Maldivian hospitality professionals, resort leaders sought to create opportunities for local youth by providing training, mentorship, and career pathways.
The first cohort consisted of just five students, all of whom successfully completed the one-year program. In 2010, the initiative became the first vocational development program in the Maldives to receive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) accreditation, providing participants with nationally recognized qualifications and competency standards.
Today, the program offers 14 specialized career tracks covering culinary arts, front office operations, engineering, housekeeping, transportation, diving and water sports, recreation, photography, and marine conservation.
Beyond Traditional Education
The Career Development Program is designed to provide more than technical training. Participants live and work within resort environments, often experiencing life away from their home islands for the first time.
Alongside professional training, the curriculum includes leadership development, emotional intelligence, and personal growth modules. Since 2023, trainees have also benefited from an international student exchange program with the Pacific nation of Palau.
The program is open to Maldivian youth aged between 17 and 20 years and has become a key talent pipeline for the hospitality industry. Many graduates now hold leadership positions within Four Seasons properties, luxury hospitality brands, and the wider tourism sector.
Commenting on the milestone, Armando Kraenzlin said:
“Twenty-five years ago, we began with only five students and a simple belief that young people, when provided with the right opportunities and support, can achieve far more than they imagine. Today, seeing more than a thousand graduates building successful careers and leading teams demonstrates the lasting impact of that vision.”
New Marine and Environmental Sciences Program Launched
As part of the silver jubilee celebrations, Four Seasons Resorts Maldives announced the launch of a new fully funded four-year Marine and Environmental Sciences training pathway, developed in partnership with the Maldives National University.
The program aims to prepare the next generation of marine biologists, environmental researchers, sustainability officers, and conservation leaders, particularly from local communities with close ties to the country’s marine ecosystems.
The initiative will commence with the Class of 2027 and represents the most academically rigorous program introduced by Four Seasons Maldives to date.
The launch comes at a critical time as the Maldives faces growing environmental pressures linked to climate change, including rising sea temperatures, coral bleaching, and threats to fisheries and coastal ecosystems.
Supporting the Future Blue Economy
Industry experts view the program as a significant contribution to the Maldives’ emerging blue economy, which relies heavily on sustainable tourism, fisheries, marine research, and environmental stewardship.
The new training pathway also addresses youth employment challenges by providing accessible higher education and career opportunities for young people from remote islands.
“The silver jubilee is not only an opportunity to celebrate our achievements but also a chance to invest in the next generation of Maldivian leaders who will help protect the unique environment that defines our islands,” said Kraenzlin.
Academic and Practical Learning Combined
Developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the Maldives National University, the program combines classroom education with extensive field experience.
During the first year, participants will divide their time between academic studies in Malé and practical training at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa.
The curriculum covers marine ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, climate science, fisheries, aquaculture, and blue economy principles. Upon completing the first year, participants will receive an Advanced Level IV Certificate in Marine and Environmental Science.
From the second year onward, trainees will enter a three-year bachelor’s degree program with specialization options in fisheries and aquaculture or climate change studies.
Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and practical expertise needed to pursue careers in marine biology, sustainability management, environmental research, and conservation, supporting both the Maldives’ environmental goals and the long-term resilience of its tourism-driven economy.
