Abu Dhabi Launches Central Control Room to Monitor Autonomous Vehicles in Real Time

Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), has launched a central control room to oversee and monitor autonomous vehicle (AV) operations across the emirate in real time, strengthening safety, regulation, and operational efficiency.

The facility was inaugurated in the presence of Sheikh Hamdan bin Saeed bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan and Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport. The initiative supports Abu Dhabi's expanding autonomous mobility ecosystem by providing advanced monitoring, data analysis, and decision-support capabilities to regulate AV services more effectively.

Equipped with a centralised supervision system and the Autonomous Vehicle Integrated Transport Operations Management System (AViTOMS), the control room enables real-time tracking of vehicle locations, speeds, and routes. The platform also records and analyses trips, coordinates emergency responses with relevant authorities, generates data-driven operational reports, and manages permits and route approvals for licensed autonomous vehicle operators.

According to the Integrated Transport Centre, the control room allows immediate monitoring of autonomous vehicle movements while ensuring compliance with operational schedules and regulatory requirements. The system is designed to improve road safety through rapid responses to operational issues and emergencies.

Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, described the launch as a major milestone in strengthening the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles. He said the new facility combines advanced technology with robust regulatory oversight to support the safe and organised deployment of smart mobility solutions across Abu Dhabi.

Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Executive Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Sector, said the initiative reflects Abu Dhabi's continued transition towards an integrated digital transport model, reinforcing the emirate's position as a leader in smart mobility and intelligent transportation.

The new control room will oversee all autonomous vehicle services operated by licensed providers in Abu Dhabi, supporting the sector's continued growth while ensuring the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
