Syria Records 111% Rise in Visitor Arrivals in H1 2026 as International Tourism Surges
Syria welcomed 3.52 million visitors during the first half of 2026, marking a 111% year-on-year increase compared with 1.67 million arrivals during the same period in 2025, according to figures released by the Ministry of Tourism.
The strong growth was driven by a 448% surge in international tourist arrivals, alongside rising regional demand, as the country continues its efforts to position tourism as a key pillar of economic development and investment.
International Tourism Sees Significant Growth
According to the ministry, international tourist arrivals climbed to 719,000 in the first six months of 2026, up from 131,000 a year earlier.
Turkey emerged as the largest international source market, followed by Germany, Sweden, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The ministry said the broader mix of visitors reflects growing interest from European and North American markets in addition to neighbouring countries.
Meanwhile, arrivals from Arab countries increased by 107%, reaching 664,000 visitors compared with 320,000 in the first half of 2025.
Jordan was the leading Arab source market, followed by Lebanon and Iraq, while visitor numbers from Gulf countries also continued to rise.
The ministry attributed the growth to increasing interest in Syria's cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and authentic travel experiences.
Syrian Diaspora Plays Key Role
Visits by Syrian expatriates also recorded strong growth, rising 75% to 2.13 million during the first half of 2026, compared with 1.22 million during the same period last year.
The ministry said returning expatriates continue to play an important role in strengthening international engagement by sharing first-hand experiences that help shape global perceptions of Syria and promote its tourism offerings.
Minister Highlights Tourism's Economic Role
Minister of Tourism Mazen Al-Salhani said the latest figures reflect growing confidence in Syria as a travel destination and provide new momentum for investment, hospitality and tourism-related services.
He added that tourism is becoming more than a source of visitor arrivals, evolving into a key economic sector that supports job creation, investment, local businesses, and stronger regional and international connections.
Al-Salhani also described Syrian expatriates as ambassadors for the country, noting that every visit helps present an authentic image of Syria and contributes to rebuilding international confidence.
Positive Outlook for Tourism Sector
Looking ahead, the ministry expects tourism activity to strengthen further during the third quarter of 2026, supported by:
- Expanded air connectivity and the return of more airlines.
- Growing demand for hospitality services.
- Increased investment in hotels and tourism projects.
- Festivals and cultural events across the country.
The ministry said these developments are expected to support one of Syria's busiest tourism seasons in recent years, while reinforcing tourism's role as a major contributor to sustainable economic growth and attracting further investment.
