EAD and ICBA Sign Agreement to Optimize Abu Dhabi’s Natural Resources
In line with the UAE’s Year of Sustainability, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration on groundwater, soil, and biodiversity initiatives. The agreement focuses on safeguarding natural resources, advancing sustainable agriculture, and supporting Abu Dhabi's sustainable development goals.
The signing ceremony, attended by Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, and Her Excellency Dr. Tarifa Ajeif Alzaabi, Director General of ICBA, followed a tour of ICBA’s headquarters. The tour highlighted innovations in saline agriculture and sustainable technologies, reinforcing both organizations’ shared goals.
Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of EAD and Chairperson of ICBA, emphasized the long-standing partnership between EAD and ICBA, stating, "This MoU reaffirms our commitment to addressing critical environmental challenges such as water scarcity, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss, while ensuring the UAE's leadership in sustainability."
Key objectives of the partnership include:
- Leveraging green energy for forestry and irrigation, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- Monitoring and rehabilitating rangelands to improve biomass for livestock and wildlife.
- Sharing data, maps, and seeds to promote biodiversity and enhance environmental analysis.
- Researching drought-resistant species and optimizing water use through modern technologies.
- Conducting studies on biochar for soil improvement, water conservation, and carbon sequestration.
The collaboration also aims to implement advanced water management practices, remote sensing, and drone technology to monitor environmental quality. Both entities will focus on biochar research, hydroponics, and gene sequencing to boost the efficiency of natural resource use, contributing to long-term sustainability.
The partnership underscores the UAE’s dedication to environmental conservation and resource management, ensuring that future generations benefit from sustainable ecosystems.
