Dubai Hosts 6th Edition of Legislative Week Focused on AI Legislation

The General Secretariat of the Supreme Legislation Committee (SLC) in Dubai has inaugurated the sixth edition of "Legislative Week" under the theme “Dubai: A Legislative Ecosystem Nurturing Artificial Intelligence”. The event, held at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library, emphasizes the critical role of legislative frameworks in advancing artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and its integration into various sectors.

Pioneering AI-Driven Legislative Frameworks

The 2024 edition underscores the transformative potential of AI in enhancing institutional performance, improving government services, and shaping future economic models. Experts in technology and legislation are convening for workshops, panel discussions, and keynote addresses, focusing on drafting AI-friendly legislation that supports innovation while addressing ethical and legal challenges.

In his opening remarks, Ahmad Saeed bin Meshar Al Muhairi, Secretary General of the SLC, highlighted the event's significance:
"Legislative Week is a vital forum for fostering collaboration among stakeholders, cultivating a robust legal culture, and ensuring Dubai’s legislative framework evolves alongside rapid technological advancements. This aligns with our national vision and reinforces Dubai’s position as a global innovation hub.”

The opening day featured prominent speakers:

  • Lori Baker, Director of Data Protection, DIFC Authority, discussed global convergence in AI policies and legislation under the session "Convergence: How the UAE and Dubai are Creating AI Policy and Legislation for Global Interoperability and High-value Innovation."
  • Dr. Mohamed Alloghani, Senior Advisor to the President of Mohamed bin Zayed University of AI, presented "AI Ethics in the Legislative Ecosystem," addressing the ethical dimensions of AI regulation.
  • Dr. Kashif Rajpoot, Professor of Medical AI, University of Birmingham Dubai, delivered insights into "Medical AI in the Balance: Unlocking Potential While Navigating Legal Boundaries," exploring AI's healthcare applications and associated legal challenges.
  • A panel from the University of Sharjah’s College of Law examined "The Impact of AI Systems on Service Contracts," shedding light on AI’s implications for contractual obligations.

Legislative Lab and Future Focus

On its second day, Legislative Week will host the Legislative Lab, which aims to explore strategies for aligning Dubai’s legislative processes with the rapid evolution of technology. This initiative represents a crucial step in strengthening Dubai’s leadership in AI governance and fostering an innovation-friendly legal ecosystem.
