Dubai Culture Launches Summer Blessings Event to Celebrate the Palm Tree

Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has unveiled its latest endeavor, the "Summer Blessings" event, dedicated to honoring the palm tree and its profound significance in Emirati culture. Set to take place at Al Shindagha Museum on May 25 and 26, 2024, the event promises a vibrant celebration featuring a range of artistic performances and heritage-related activities inspired by this national icon.

Aligned with Dubai Culture's commitment to preserving tangible and intangible heritage and showcasing it on the global stage, the "Summer Blessings" event seeks to shine a spotlight on the palm tree's rich cultural heritage.

The UAE's largest heritage museum, Al Shindagha Museum, will serve as the event's venue, hosting interactive workshops led by specialized heritage experts. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in workshops at the Children’s Pavilion, where they can learn the art of origami, palm frond weaving techniques, and methods of dyeing palm fronds to create various accessories.

Meanwhile, the Turath Centre for Traditional Handicrafts will offer workshops focusing on traditional handicrafts, providing insights into the history of these crafts, the anatomy of the palm tree, and the creation of modern products using palm fronds.

As part of the celebration of the date season, the Traditional Food House will offer visitors a chance to explore date preservation techniques, sample fresh dates, and learn about their use in Emirati cuisine. Additionally, visitors can discover traditional date dishes and techniques for extracting date syrup.

Dubai Culture has curated a traditional market within the Visitors Centre, showcasing the craftsmanship of local artisans and promoting heritage preservation. Alongside these offerings, a diverse array of products by creatives will be on display, fostering community empowerment and inclusion.

Throughout May, guests at Al Shindagha Museum can enjoy family trails organized by Dubai Culture, enabling them to explore various museum collections and exhibitions. Additionally, visitors can immerse themselves in the Date Harvest Performance, presented by Emirati artist Marei AlHalyan, which highlights the significance of the date harvest season and its cultural importance.

Abdallah Al Obeidli, Acting Manager of Al Shindagha Museum at Dubai Culture, reiterated the Authority's commitment to celebrating Emirati heritage elements, particularly the palm tree. He emphasized the palm tree's integral role in Emirati life, serving as a symbol of generosity, inspiration, and innovation. The "Summer Blessings" event aims to deepen the community's connection to this cherished symbol and showcase associated professions and handicrafts in a contemporary yet authentic manner, preserving Dubai's rich history.
