Brain & Performance Centre partners with UAE Athletic Commission to enhance boxer safety

The Brain & Performance Centre, a DP World company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UAE Athletic Commission to strengthen athlete safety and enhance medical standards for professional boxing events across the UAE.

Under the agreement, the Centre will become one of the Commission's approved medical service providers, offering comprehensive pre-fight brain health and performance assessments to professional boxers competing in sanctioned events.

While pre-fight MRI examinations will remain mandatory as part of the medical clearance process, athletes will also have the option to undergo additional neurological and performance assessments designed to provide a broader understanding of their brain health before entering the ring.

The optional assessments will complement MRI scans by measuring key indicators such as cognitive function, reaction time, balance and other neurological performance metrics using advanced technologies and scientifically validated assessment protocols.

According to the Centre, the additional data will support more informed medical decision-making while helping athletes better understand their neurological health and overall performance.

Dr Craig Cook, Chief Executive Officer of The Brain & Performance Centre, said the partnership represents an important step towards advancing brain health through science and innovation.

He noted that providing athletes with access to comprehensive neurological assessments supports their long-term health by offering a deeper understanding of brain function both inside and outside the sporting arena.

Pat Fiacco, Boxing Commissioner at the UAE Athletic Commission, said the collaboration reinforces the Commission's commitment to maintaining the highest international standards of athlete health and safety.

He added that making comprehensive neurological assessments available alongside mandatory MRI examinations strengthens the integrity and professionalism of boxing in the UAE while setting a benchmark for the sport's continued development across the region.

The Brain & Performance Centre said the optional assessments will be made available to professional boxers competing in sanctioned UAE events later this year, with further details regarding referrals and implementation expected to be announced in the coming months.
