Al Qemzi Eyes Record Fifth Title as Al Mansoori Targets First F2 World Crown
Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Qemzi and Mansoor Al Mansoori are set for a thrilling conclusion to the UIM F2 World Championship this weekend in Portugal, where both drivers have a chance to claim the world title.
Four-time champion and current points leader, Al Qemzi, holds a six-point advantage over Lithuania's Edgaras Riabko, with Al Mansoori just four points behind in third place. A second-place finish at the Grand Prix of Portugal II would secure a record fifth F2 crown for Al Qemzi, making him the first-ever to achieve the feat.
However, if Al Mansoori replicates last weekend’s win in Peso Da Régua and Al Qemzi finishes fourth, Al Mansoori could capture his first world title. Despite the friendly rivalry, both drivers are focused on securing the 18th world championship for Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club under team manager Guido Cappellini.
“We’re team-mates and friends, but we both want to win the title,” said Al Qemzi. “The team will make sure both boats are ready, and then it’s up to us not to do anything that could hurt the team.”
Al Mansoori is aiming for pole position on Saturday to gain a competitive edge: “It can make a huge difference on Sunday. I want to get the best out of myself and my boat.”
Meanwhile, Riabko, who finished third in last weekend’s race, is also in contention and will aim for a victory to secure his first world title.
As the top three battle for the championship, other drivers like Sweden’s Mathilda Wiberg, Britain’s Matthew Palfreyman, and Frenchman Nelson Morin could influence the final outcome.
