Real-time DMS alerts make Dubai roads safer and faster
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that its Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) system has significantly enhanced road safety and reduced travel times across the emirate. The smart electronic signage network, which delivers real-time traffic updates, has been instrumental in guiding motorists and preventing congestion on key routes.
According to RTA, the DMS system has helped reduce travel times by up to 20% on major roads while improving overall road safety by alerting drivers about accidents, traffic jams, and adverse weather conditions ahead of time.
112 signs across Dubai’s main roads
Currently, 112 Dynamic Message Signs are installed strategically across Dubai’s road network. These digital boards are fully integrated with the iTraffic system at the Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre, ensuring seamless communication between field units and central traffic operations.
“The system improves safety by sending sequential alerts based on where incidents occur,” explained Salah Al Marzouqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA. “Messages start two kilometres before the incident, followed by congestion warnings and route guidance farther away to divert vehicles and reduce secondary accidents.”
Real-time updates for smoother journeys
The DMS network plays a crucial role in real-time communication with motorists, broadcasting vital information such as accident alerts, congestion warnings, vehicle breakdowns, and route changes during major events.
Twenty-two of these signs display estimated travel times to popular destinations, including Dubai International Airport and Dubai Marina, allowing drivers to plan efficient routes.
During the first half of 2025, the RTA recorded 17,819 displayed messages through the system. Of these, 12,283 were accident alerts, while others included warnings, congestion updates, vehicle breakdowns, weather notifications, and roadwork information.
Artificial intelligence for safer mobility
The DMS system operates through advanced sensors that track travel speed, vehicle volume, and weather data. The iTraffic platform, powered by artificial intelligence, analyses this information in real time to produce dynamic response plans. Depending on the situation, responses can be operator-approved or automated, especially during critical conditions like heavy rain or fog.
By integrating AI-powered decision-making with on-ground signage, RTA continues to strengthen its role as a global leader in smart mobility solutions.
Supporting Dubai’s smart city vision
The Dynamic Message Signs initiative aligns with Dubai’s Smart City Vision, promoting safer, faster, and more sustainable travel for residents and visitors. By merging technology, communication, and data analytics, RTA ensures that every motorist benefits from real-time awareness and smoother journeys.
