Dubai Metro Expansion: Blue and Gold Lines Set to Transform City Connectivity

Dubai is accelerating its public transport evolution with the introduction of two major metro projects — the Blue Line and the newly announced Gold Line — set to reshape how residents move across the city. The expansion is expected to significantly improve access to areas that were previously not served by the metro, while strengthening links between existing networks.

Both new lines will integrate with the current Dubai Metro system as well as Etihad Rail, creating a more seamless and connected transport experience. The Blue Line will connect with the Green Line at Creek Station and with the Red Line at Centrepoint Station. Meanwhile, the Gold Line will link with the Green Line at Al Ghubaiba Station and the Red Line at Business Bay Station and Jumeirah Golf Estates Station, with additional integration into the national rail network at Jumeirah Golf Estates and a future interchange at Meydan.

The Blue Line, scheduled to open on September 9, 2029, will mark the 20th anniversary of the metro system. Spanning 30 kilometres with 14 stations, the project will combine underground and elevated tracks. It will feature the world’s tallest metro station at Emaar Properties Station and introduce the first metro bridge crossing Dubai Creek. The route will connect key residential and commercial hubs including Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Ras Al Khor, International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City, with a second route linking Mirdif and Al Warqa to the wider network.

The Gold Line, set for completion on September 9, 2032, will be Dubai’s first fully underground metro line. Stretching 42 kilometres with 18 stations, it is designed to serve around 1.5 million residents and expand the metro network by 35 per cent. The line will run from Al Ghubaiba to Jumeirah Golf Estates, passing through major destinations such as Mina Rashid, City Walk, Business Bay, Mohammed Bin Rashid City, Nad Al Sheba, Meydan, Al Barsha South and Jumeirah Village Triangle. It is also expected to ease congestion on the Red Line and significantly reduce road traffic across the emirate.

The Blue Line project was launched under the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, reflecting Dubai’s broader strategy to develop a smart, integrated and sustainable mobility ecosystem. With both lines in place, the city is set to benefit from improved connectivity, reduced congestion and enhanced access to key growth corridors.
