Workshop highlights contribution of Nobel Prizes in dissemination of knowledge
The contribution of Nobel Prizes in dissemination of knowledge was highlighted at a workshop, the second in a series, organised as part of Nobel Museums travelling exhibition currently being hosted in Dubai by Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation (MBRF).
Led by Dr. Gustav Kllstrand, Senior Curator, Nobel Museum, the workshop titled Ideas Changing the World: Impact of the Nobel Prizes also provided an overview of the mechanism of nomination of the recipients of the award over the decades. It was attended by His Excellency Jamal bin Huwaireb, Managing Director of MBRF, and a number of specialists as well as representatives of various media in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kllstrand said the founder of the Prize, Alfred Nobel, was not only an inventor but a businessman who devoted considerable time and effort to ensure that inventions provided real benefit to people, met the needs of the market and provided returns to the inventor.
The Nobel Prize has contributed to the dissemination of knowledge and has been a source of inspiration for people to work on some of the major inventions in the society. The Prize will continue to help create more scientists in the coming years, Dr. Kllstrand said.
In honouring individuals for outstanding achievements in various fields, the Nobel Prize also recognises their countries for creating ideal environments for inventors and achievers. The Nobel Foundation in Stockholm has established the innovation culture by involving scientists, institutions and governments in the exchange of ideas and inspiring people to serve humanity to create a better world, Dr. Kllstrand added.
Dr. Kllstrand is currently focused on his studies of the Nobel Prize by organising the Nobel Foundations archives. Although the Nobel Prize is Kllstrands main interest, he has also co-written a history of the Swedish space programme and a history of a Swedish publishing house. Kllstrand also lectures on the history of the Nobel Prize, and makes frequent appearances in Swedish and international media commenting on the Prize.
The next workshop titled Micro-finance, addressed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, will take place on Sunday 19th of April. The Nobel Museum exhibition at the Burj Khalifa annex in Downtown Dubai is open to visitors daily until April 30th from 9:00 pm until 7:00 pm except on Fridays.
MBRF is organising the exhibition in Dubai under the theme, The Nobel Prize: Ideas Changing the World. This is the first time the exhibition is being hosted in a new concept and theme in an Arabic city.
