Vertiv and ZincFive Collaborate to Introduce Nickel-Zinc Battery Energy Storage for Data Center UPS in North America and EMEA

Vertiv (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has announced a collaboration with ZincFive®, the world leader in nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery-based solutions for immediate power applications. This partnership will see Vertiv incorporating ZincFive’s BC Series uninterruptible power supply (UPS) Battery Cabinets into its portfolio of battery systems for data center backup power.

The safe and recyclable nickel-zinc batteries are compatible with select large and medium Vertiv™ UPS systems, including the newly launched Vertiv™ Trinergy. This addition reinforces Vertiv's commitment to helping customers minimize the environmental footprint of their data center sites. The ZincFive BC Series UPS Battery Cabinets are now available from Vertiv in North America and the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region.

Industry-Leading Battery Solutions

ZincFive’s BC Series UPS Battery Cabinets are the first nickel-zinc battery energy storage solution with backward and forward compatibility with megawatt-class UPS systems. The BC Series offers the smallest footprint in the industry compared to VRLA and Lithium-Ion batteries and requires minimal maintenance. The NiZn chemistry ensures reliable operation, with battery strings remaining conductive even with weak or depleted cells.

A study by Boundless Impact, commissioned by ZincFive, validates that ZincFive’s NiZn batteries have a significantly lower end-to-end environmental impact than lead-acid and lithium batteries. This third-party analysis highlights the environmental benefits of NiZn technology.

Leadership Insights

Tim Hysell, CEO and co-founder of ZincFive, emphasized the company's commitment to innovation, stating, "Our powerful, safe, and reliable nickel-zinc battery technology shines through in the BC Series. It meets the evolving demands of data centers both today and in the future. The rising importance of sustainability in data center backup battery systems aligns perfectly with the values of ZincFive, our partners, and our customers. We are dedicated to minimizing carbon emissions and operational expenses without compromising safety or performance."

Milind Paranjape, Vertiv’s senior director of Energy Storage, echoed this sentiment, saying, "Vertiv and ZincFive aim to enable reliable and efficiently operated data centers worldwide, providing greater access to data with less waste and greater energy efficiency. Vertiv has already deployed ZincFive products at several major data center sites."

Paranjape also highlighted the technology's suitability for customers facing challenges with local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) regarding National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and the International Fire Code (IFC).
