University of Sharjah’s My FarmWell App Wins UAE Engineering Excellence Award

The University of Sharjah’s My FarmWell Application has won the Excellence and Creative Engineering Award presented by the Society of Engineers UAE under the Pioneer Engineering Project category.

The project was recognised as the “Best Small Project” during the fourth edition of the awards programme, highlighting its contribution to sustainable water management, smart agriculture, and artificial intelligence-driven engineering solutions in the UAE.

According to the award criteria, a small project is defined as one valued at up to AED 50 million and completed within the last three years.

The Society of Engineers UAE stated that the award recognises projects demonstrating engineering excellence, innovation, sustainability, and measurable societal impact.

Established in 1979 through Ministerial Decree No. 33, the Society of Engineers UAE is one of the region’s largest professional engineering organisations, representing more than 40,000 members.

Since the launch of the award programme, 79 projects have been selected as winners from over 1,268 submissions across various engineering categories, reflecting growing innovation within the UAE engineering sector.

AI-powered solution for sustainable agriculture

The My FarmWell platform was developed to support farmers and improve groundwater sustainability through the integration of artificial intelligence, environmental monitoring, and digital decision-support technologies.

The application combines well water monitoring, irrigation management tools, weather updates, sustainable farming guidance, crop pricing information, and AI-powered chatbot assistance designed to help users make informed agricultural and water management decisions.

The platform also provides access to water regulations and data-driven insights aimed at improving resource efficiency across the UAE and wider Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The application is available for download through the App Store and Google Play.

Collaboration between academia, technology, and government

The project represents a collaborative initiative involving the University of Sharjah, IBM, Khalifa University, government agencies, researchers, and technical teams.

The initiative aligns with broader national efforts focused on enhancing water security, promoting sustainable agriculture, and accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies in environmental management.

The project was led by Dr. Adewale Giwa, Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, whose research focuses on water sustainability and artificial intelligence applications.

Through the My FarmWell initiative, the research team developed practical digital tools to support farmers in groundwater monitoring, irrigation management, and sustainability awareness.

IBM supported the initiative through its IBM Impact Accelerator programme, contributing expertise in artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and data analytics to strengthen the platform’s capabilities.

Supporting sustainability and climate resilience

The recognition of My FarmWell highlights the increasing importance of interdisciplinary engineering solutions that combine artificial intelligence with sustainability-focused innovation.

By addressing challenges related to groundwater depletion, climate resilience, and agricultural water consumption, the project demonstrates how digital technologies can support long-term environmental sustainability and smarter resource management.

The award marks a major milestone for the initiative and reinforces the role of research-driven innovation in supporting the UAE’s sustainable development goals.
