UAE participates in 116th Arab Economic and Social Council, reaffirms commitment to joint Arab action
The UAE took part in the 116th session of the Arab Economic and Social Council, held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo from August 31 to September 3, 2025. Chaired by Tunisia, the meetings brought together delegations from member states to discuss prospects for enhancing Arab cooperation in economic and social fields, supporting sustainable development, and coordinating regional responses to global challenges.
The UAE delegation was led by H.E. Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, who emphasized the country’s ongoing commitment to advancing Arab economic integration and supporting joint initiatives that foster development across the region.
H.E. Al Saleh said: “The UAE, under the guidance of its wise leadership, remains committed to actively shaping and implementing economic and social initiatives that foster Arab integration and support the welfare of Arab societies. This session represents an important milestone in aligning positions and coordinating joint efforts toward comprehensive development.”
Key agenda items and priorities
The Council’s discussions addressed a wide range of issues, including:

Enhancing intra-Arab trade and finalizing the framework for the Arab Customs Union.

Advancing the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA) and removing customs barriers.

Strengthening food and water security across the region.

Promoting investment, entrepreneurship, and joint Arab financing initiatives.

Developing regional transport and logistics networks.

Supporting digital transformation, innovation, and inclusive economic growth.
On the social front, discussions included initiatives to strengthen public health programs, expand educational opportunities, promote cultural and media cooperation, and empower youth and women in the labor market. The Council also reviewed the Arab strategy for the empowerment of people of determination, in line with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
H.E. Al Saleh further highlighted the UAE’s commitment to strengthening the role of Arab organizations, noting that they serve as centers of expertise and play a vital role in advancing shared development priorities. He referenced a UAE-backed resolution adopted at the previous session, which established an expert task force to design strategies for boosting the efficiency of Arab organizations.
The Council also reviewed progress on previous summit resolutions, assessed priority projects, and explored partnerships with international and regional bodies to advance joint Arab economic and social action.
