Traffic point reduction: UAE motorists rush to sign up for ‘Accident-Free Day’ pledge
Drivers who complete the day without violations will have their points deducted electronically on September 15, without needing to visit service centres
UAE motorists are eagerly registering for the Ministry of Interior’s ‘Accident-Free Day’ pledge, which offers the opportunity to have four black points removed from their traffic records by committing to safe driving on August 25, 2025.
The campaign coincides with the first day of the new school year, highlighting the importance of road safety in school zones where children’s safety is a top priority.
For 29-year-old Ahmed Salim, the initiative arrives at just the right time.
“I already have 12 black points, mostly from speeding fines,” he said. “Getting four points deducted is a relief. This pledge is a good reminder to be more disciplined and focused on the road. I plan to treat that day as a challenge to keep calm and follow every rule strictly.”
Motorists across the emirates have welcomed the initiative, with many urging friends and family to sign up. “Everyone who knew me, especially my closest friend, called me to register for the pledge,” said one participant. “He told me, ‘I hope you learn from this one.’”
This campaign is part of a series of road safety initiatives launched in recent years, designed to encourage responsible driving habits and reward compliance with traffic laws.
Long-time driver Khaled Mansour, 41, a Jordanian expat who has commuted between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain for nearly two decades, described the initiative as a positive reset.
“It’s a nice challenge to be consciously aware of my driving all day,” he said. “I’ll keep an eye on my speed, avoid distractions like using my phone, and always give way to others. It feels like hitting a reset button on my driving habits.”
The pledge requires drivers to adhere strictly to traffic rules, including wearing seat belts, maintaining safe distances, respecting pedestrian crossings, and giving way to emergency vehicles. Avoiding distractions such as mobile phone use is also a key focus.
Sharjah resident Fatima Ali, 29, hopes to benefit from the initiative by reducing her six black points. “I’m motivated to drive more carefully, especially with schools reopening soon,” she said. Fatima admitted that traffic congestion often leads to moments of inattention, but the pledge serves as a strong reminder to stay alert.
Registration for the pledge is available online through the Ministry of Interior’s official portal. Drivers who successfully complete the day without violations will see four black points automatically deducted from their records on September 15, 2025, without the need to visit any service centre.
“Our goal is to create a safer environment for all road users by encouraging adherence to traffic regulations,” said Brigadier Engineer Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council. “These campaigns help save lives and protect property, while reinforcing the culture of safety on UAE roads.”
