Thani Al Qemzi Aims for Strong Finish in Sharjah as Andersson and Wyatt Face Title Decider

Team Abu Dhabi’s Thani Al Qemzi, one of the most celebrated names in powerboat racing, is gearing up for an exciting conclusion to the 2024 UIM F1H2O World Championship at the Grand Prix of Sharjah this weekend. As the season finale unfolds at the iconic Khalid Lagoon, the veteran driver reflects on his journey and looks ahead to a new chapter in his storied career.

A Career Full Circle

Al Qemzi’s debut in the F1H2O series dates back to November 2000, right here in Sharjah. Although his maiden race ended in retirement, his career since has been remarkable. Over 24 years, Al Qemzi has:

  • Achieved two runner-up finishes in the world championship.
  • Finished third six times.
  • Contributed to Team Abu Dhabi's fifth consecutive world team title two years ago.
  • Amassed multiple Grand Prix victories, earning him immense respect in the sport.

This Sunday, he will mark his 158th Grand Prix, aiming to end the season on a high note and add to his illustrious record.

Title Showdown: Andersson vs. Wyatt

The Sharjah finale will also see defending champion Jonas Andersson and Rusty Wyatt of Sharjah Team battling for the 2024 world title. Both drivers are set to deliver high-stakes performances in the tense decider.

A Season of Challenges and Optimism

Currently sitting 11th in the standings, Al Qemzi acknowledges the challenges faced by Team Abu Dhabi this season but remains optimistic about the future. He will reunite with Sweden’s Erik Stark in 2025, a partnership he believes will help return Team Abu Dhabi to its winning ways.

“The first priority is to find a big finish to the season in Sharjah,” said Al Qemzi. “It’s always been a special place for me. Next season, Erik and I will push each other to achieve the results we’re capable of and hopefully take Team Abu Dhabi back to the top.”

Stark’s Final Race with Victory Team

Meanwhile, Erik Stark will conclude his stint with Victory Team in fourth place at Sharjah before returning to Team Abu Dhabi next season. Having secured victory at the Grand Prix of Binh Dinh, Vietnam, in March, Stark hopes to replicate that form this weekend.

As the 2024 UIM F1H2O World Championship wraps up, all eyes will be on Sharjah, where seasoned competitors and rising stars alike will seek to etch their names in the record books.
