Rare White Rhino Calf Salam Born At Dubai Safari Park Amid Regional Tensions

Dubai Safari Park has welcomed a rare white rhino calf, named Salam, marking a significant milestone in wildlife conservation and offering a symbol of hope and peace during a time of regional tension.

Born on March 1, the calf weighed a healthy 73.5kg and is already showing strong development, including standing, walking, and nursing confidently under the care of his mother, Olive.

The name “Salam,” meaning peace, was chosen to reflect a message of optimism and resilience, as the region faces ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

“We are delighted to welcome our newest calf,” said Muna Alhajeri. “Salam is a reminder of positivity and strength, both in our conservation efforts and in everyday life.”

Salam is the second white rhino calf born at the park under its endangered species breeding programme, following his older sibling Onyx, who was born in 2024. The birth is particularly important as southern white rhinos are classified as ‘near threatened’, with only around 15,700 remaining in the wild.

Currently, Salam is being cared for in a dedicated nursery den, where he is closely monitored by a team of expert zoologists and veterinarians, ensuring optimal health, comfort, and bonding with his mother.

The park plays a broader role in conservation, with a portion of every ticket contributing directly to wildlife rescue, care, and research initiatives, allowing visitors to support global biodiversity efforts.

Since opening in 2018, Dubai Safari Park has grown into a major conservation hub, now home to over 3,000 animals across 300 species. Its latest season, launched in October 2025 under the theme “Wild Rules,” features six immersive zones, interactive experiences, and educational programmes designed to raise awareness about wildlife and ecosystems.

As a member of leading global organisations such as the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the park adheres to international standards in animal welfare, conservation, and sustainability.

Salam’s arrival not only strengthens ongoing conservation efforts but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting endangered species for future generations.
