More UAE residents opt to pay higher rents to cut commute times

With traffic congestion intensifying across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, more residents are choosing to relocate closer to their workplaces—even if it means paying significantly higher rents. The shift highlights how professionals are prioritising time, productivity, and well-being over cost savings.

For Thamjid Mohamed Sidhik, a former Sharjah resident, the long daily commute became unsustainable. To reclaim personal time and reduce stress, he moved to Al Warqa, much closer to his workplace. However, the decision came at a steep financial cost.

“It used to take one hour in the morning to work and an hour and 15 minutes while returning. However, it now takes only 20 minutes in the morning and around 30 minutes in the evening. My rent more than doubled from Dh42,000 to Dh90,000, but I needed the time back to focus on my health and family,” Sidhik told Khaleej Times.

Traffic surge drives housing decisions

Industry executives confirm that many UAE residents are making similar choices. Recruitment and real estate professionals note that workers are increasingly prioritising reduced commute times and improved work-life balance.

Congestion has risen sharply as families return from summer holidays and schools reopen. According to Salik’s H1 2025 report, the number of registered active vehicles reached 4.56 million in the second quarter of this year, compared to 4.17 million during the same period in 2024.

Changing priorities for professionals

“We are observing a growing shift in employee priorities when it comes to work-life balance,” said Pedro Lacerda, country head of the UAE at TASC Group. “With the surge in traffic across major cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, many professionals are beginning to re-evaluate their daily commute and its impact on productivity, well-being, and personal time.

“Employees are becoming more conscious of the value of time, and long hours spent on the road are leading many to consider relocating closer to their workplaces. This change not only saves commuting time but also reduces stress, enabling them to spend more quality time with family or pursue personal interests.”
