Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Award honors global pioneers of innovation

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Award continues to reinforce its position as a leading global platform recognising individuals and institutions shaping the future of knowledge and innovation.

Established in 2015 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the award reflects the UAE’s vision of placing knowledge at the heart of sustainable development, while encouraging scientific research, education, and global collaboration.

Recognising transformative global contributions

Since its inception, the award has honoured influential figures whose work has driven major global transformations.

Among its notable laureates is Tim Berners-Lee, credited with revolutionising communication through the creation of the World Wide Web, and Jimmy Wales, who established Wikipedia, the world’s largest open-access knowledge platform.

The award has also recognised Hiroshi Ishiguro for pioneering work in humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence, and Melinda Gates for advancing global education initiatives. Contributions to sustainable development and healthcare have also been honoured, including those of Hiroshi Komiyama and the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation.

Breakthroughs shaping modern science

A major milestone came in 2022, when scientists Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman were recognised for their groundbreaking mRNA research, which enabled the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines. Their work later earned them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023.

Other distinguished honourees include Henrik von Scheel and Zhang Yongzhen, who played a key role in sharing the first COVID-19 genomic sequence, accelerating global vaccine efforts. The award has also celebrated the Emirates Mars Mission (Hope Probe) for its contributions to space science and global data sharing.

Honouring contemporary innovators

More recently, the award recognised Andrew Ng for advancing artificial intelligence and digital education, alongside Emirati physicist Ahmed Eid Almheiri for his work in theoretical physics.

It also honoured David Clark and Anke Ehlers for their contributions to technology and mental health treatment, as well as Juma Al Majid for his lifelong efforts in knowledge preservation and cultural heritage.

A global platform for knowledge and progress

Through its continued recognition of scientific pioneers, educators, and innovators, MBRKA underscores the UAE’s commitment to fostering a knowledge-based economy and supporting human development worldwide.

The award remains a powerful symbol of the belief that knowledge is the driving force behind progress, shaping a more sustainable and innovative future for humanity.
