Milestone Expands Project Hafnia to Europe with NVIDIA to Revolutionize Urban Infrastructure and AI-Powered Traffic Management

Genoa, Italy becomes the first European city to benefit from compliant vision AI solutions aligned with EU regulations

Milestone, in collaboration with NVIDIA, has officially expanded its cutting-edge Project Hafnia to Europe, starting with the city of Genoa, Italy, after a successful launch in the United States. The initiative aims to transform urban infrastructure and traffic systems using AI-powered video analytics, built on ethically sourced, regulation-compliant data trained with NVIDIA NeMo Curator on NVIDIA DGX Cloud.

Project Hafnia becomes one of the first platforms to meet the rigorous standards of the EU’s GDPR and AI Act, enabling European cities to harness AI innovations while maintaining full compliance, transparency, and ethical integrity.

A Smart Leap for Genoa

Genoa is the first European municipality to benefit from the project’s visual language models (VLMs) trained on transportation video data. These VLMs, optimized for NVIDIA GPUs, can process visual inputs and deliver actionable summaries for real-time traffic and infrastructure management.

“We enthusiastically joined forces with Project Hafnia to provide developers with critical video data for Vision AI model training. This aligns with Italy’s Three-Year Plan for Information Technology and promotes responsible digital transformation,” said Andrea Sinisi, Information Systems Officer, City of Genoa.

NVIDIA and Milestone: Driving AI in Smart Cities

Milestone is among the early adopters of the NVIDIA Omniverse Blueprint for Smart City AI, a comprehensive framework for building AI-driven city operations powered by digital twins. Through NVIDIA Cosmos, Milestone can generate synthetic video data based on real-world conditions, accelerating AI training and deployment while reducing dependency on real-time video capture.

The new VLMs represent a breakthrough in AI-based transportation management, delivering intelligent insights while protecting privacy and upholding EU data regulations.

A European Cloud, A European Ethos

Project Hafnia’s European data infrastructure is hosted on Nebius, a sovereign EU-based cloud provider and official NVIDIA partner. This ensures that all sensitive public-sector data remains within EU jurisdiction.

“From our EU-based data centers to deep integration with NVIDIA’s AI stack, Nebius supports the most demanding AI workloads with unmatched security, transparency, and performance,” said Roman Chernin, Chief Business Officer, Nebius.

Setting the Standard for Ethical AI

“With Project Hafnia, we’re launching the world’s first platform that meets EU regulatory standards for AI development — fully powered by NVIDIA and anchored in Europe,” said Thomas Jensen, CEO of Milestone. “We are proud to lead the way in supporting the EU’s principles of fairness, transparency, and responsible innovation.”

Project Hafnia not only supports traffic and public safety but is designed to scale across domains and modalities, paving the way for future applications in urban security, crowd management, and emergency response.

About Project Hafnia

Project Hafnia serves as a centralized ecosystem for video data curation, enabling AI developers to access, label, and train on verified datasets that meet global compliance standards. It provides the essential link between raw video inputs and sophisticated vision AI models capable of summarization, search, and real-time decision-making.

By organizing the world’s video data with its network of tech partners, Milestone is helping businesses and governments build AI responsibly, without compromising privacy, quality, or regulatory integrity.
