International Defence Conference 2025 addresses global disruptions and defence preparedness

The International Defence Conference 2025 (IDC 2025) opened with a critical discussion on the impact of global disruptions, highlighting the urgent need for resilient supply chains in national defence and security. The session, titled Global Disruptions and Defence Preparedness: Mitigating Threats to Critical Supply Chains, brought together global defence experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore solutions for strengthening supply chain resilience amid geopolitical tensions, cyber threats, natural disasters, and pandemics.

His Excellency General (Ret.) Hulusi Akar, Member of Parliament and Chair of the National Defence Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, emphasized the vulnerabilities of global supply chains and the need for advanced technological solutions. He pointed to artificial intelligence, blockchain, and automation as key tools for enhancing supply chain security, stressing the importance of speed, innovation, and private-sector collaboration.

Farooq Al Zeer, Chairman of the Logistics Cluster at AD Ports Group, highlighted Abu Dhabi’s rapid response capabilities, citing the UAE’s efficient vaccine distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that digital and security platforms developed by Abu Dhabi Ports ensure crisis preparedness, maintaining seamless service operations even amid global disruptions.

Professor ManMohan S. Sodhi of Bayes Business School outlined emerging threats to supply chains, including interception and infiltration. He warned that geopolitical tactics, such as piracy in key maritime routes, pose significant risks, and cautioned against the influence of tech giants entering defence and logistics, which could destabilize global security.

Tim Cahill, President of Missiles, Fire & Control at Lockheed Martin, acknowledged ongoing challenges in sourcing critical materials, particularly titanium. While global supply chain disruptions are stabilizing, he stressed that international collaboration remains essential for strengthening supply chain resilience. He highlighted the need for streamlined policies and strategic partnerships to address bureaucratic hurdles that slow progress.

Held under the theme Defence Reimagined: Innovation, Integration, and Resilience, IDC 2025 is organized by ADNEC Group in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Defence and Tawazun Council. The conference serves as a global platform for fostering cross-border cooperation and long-term defence partnerships, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to advancing innovation and international collaboration in the sector.

With a legacy of driving impactful discussions, IDC has established itself as one of the world’s leading forums for defence and security dialogue. Previous editions have played a key role in shaping global strategies, showcasing cutting-edge defence technologies, and reinforcing international security alliances.
