ICD Brookfield Place Launches Strategic Net Zero Carbon Roadmap Aligned with UAE Climate Goals

In a bold move to advance environmental sustainability, ICD Brookfield Place has unveiled its Net Zero Carbon Pathway Report, a strategic framework that sets the iconic development on track to reach net zero operational carbon emissions by 2030. The plan affirms the complex’s commitment to the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative and aligns with global sustainability objectives.

The announcement marks a significant milestone following ICD Brookfield Place’s 2022 pledge to the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, targeting the elimination of Scope 1 and 2 emissions within this decade and working toward the broader reduction of Scope 3 emissions across its value chain. The roadmap is built upon the sustainability principles of Brookfield Asset Management.

“ICD Brookfield Place is committed to redefining what sustainable real estate can achieve in the region. This isn’t just about meeting targets—it’s about raising the bar through innovation and action,” said Rob Devereux, CEO of Brookfield Properties.

Key Milestones in the Pathway:

  • Science-Aligned Emission Targets: The site is aiming for a 3.3% annual reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, translating to a 23.3% total reduction by 2030.

  • Proven Results in 2024: Implementation of no-cost energy optimisation measures led to a 16% drop in district cooling demand and a 7% reduction in electricity use.

  • Carbon Impact: These improvements have prevented the release of 463 metric tons of greenhouse gases, cutting nearly 5% of Scope 2 emissions.

  • Tenant Engagement: 92% of tenants participated in the initial phase of the sustainability programme, with almost half committing to independent net zero goals.

The Three Pillars of the Net Zero Strategy:

  1. Energy Efficiency
ICD Brookfield Place is utilising a digital twin Building Energy Performance Model, executing ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit recommendations, and enhancing operational efficiency through data analytics.

  2. Renewable Energy Transition
The site is actively pursuing both on-site solar installations and off-site renewable procurement through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs).

  3. Value Chain Decarbonisation
Scope 3 emissions are being addressed via tenant collaboration, sustainable procurement policies, and advanced waste management systems that support a circular economy model.

These initiatives are backed by a governance framework that embeds sustainability at all organizational levels, smart building technologies, and partnerships with key industry stakeholders.

ICD Brookfield Place’s roadmap represents a replicable model for urban decarbonization. As the UAE accelerates toward its 2050 climate neutrality goal, it reinforces Dubai's leadership in climate-responsive urban development.
