ICBA Marks 25 Years of Innovation in Agricultural Research and Sustainable Development
The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) is celebrating a milestone as it approaches its 25th anniversary, reflecting on a journey of resilience, innovation, and steadfast commitment to sustainable agriculture. Established in 1999 through a visionary partnership between the UAE Government and the Islamic Development Bank, ICBA has evolved from a regional initiative to a global leader in biosaline agriculture and climate-resilient farming solutions.
Headquartered in Dubai, ICBA was created to address the challenges of agriculture in saline and arid environments. Initially focusing on combating soil and water salinization, the center's mandate has since expanded to tackle broader global issues such as food security, water scarcity, and climate change adaptation. Over the past 25 years, ICBA has supported communities in more than 50 countries, providing them with sustainable agriculture solutions for their most pressing challenges.
A Legacy of Innovation and Strategic Collaboration
ICBA’s early focus was on identifying salt-tolerant crops and developing technologies that promoted resource-efficient agriculture in water-scarce regions. Today, ICBA leads innovative projects spanning natural resource management, climate adaptation, and agri-aquaculture. The center's genebank houses one of the world’s largest collections of drought-, heat-, and salt-tolerant plants, preserving crop diversity crucial for resilience in extreme environments.
Notable contributions include the Emirates Soil Museum and the Desert Life Sciences Laboratory, both of which enhance understanding of soil and plant resources in arid climates. Additionally, ICBA has been instrumental in promoting the use of climate-resilient crops such as quinoa and pearl millet, which contribute to strengthening food security and fostering sustainable agricultural production in drylands.
Empowering Global Communities Through Knowledge and Partnerships
In addition to its research efforts, ICBA has prioritized capacity development, collaborating with organizations around the world to empower farmers, scientists, and policymakers with the knowledge and tools for sustainable agriculture. Partnerships with key entities like the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment underline ICBA’s role in driving agricultural innovation on a global scale.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Next 25 Years
As ICBA celebrates its 25th anniversary, the center remains dedicated to leading advancements in biosaline and climate-resilient agriculture. With an unwavering focus on addressing climate challenges, ICBA aims to deepen its research, expand its partnerships, and continue strengthening resilient food systems that will benefit communities worldwide in the years to come.
