H.E. Dr. Amna Al Dahak: Earth Day to raise public plastic awareness and reinforce the UAE’s transition towards a circular economy
In commemoration of Earth Day, Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, has underscored the pivotal role of the occasion in spotlighting the imperative to reduce plastic consumption across all sectors of society. Emphasizing the UAE's commitment to transitioning towards a circular economy, H.E. Al Dahak highlighted the urgent need to address the escalating challenge of plastic pollution.
Under the theme "Planet vs. Plastic," this year's Earth Day draws attention to the alarming rise in plastic waste contaminating oceans, rivers, and ecosystems, posing a direct threat to human health and biodiversity. Notably, global plastic waste production has doubled over the past two decades, signaling a pressing need for concerted action.
In response to this challenge, the UAE has proactively enacted legislation to restrict the use of single-use plastic products and implement policies aimed at significantly curbing plastic pollution. H.E. Al Dahak emphasized the significance of the UAE's Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, which seeks to foster sustainable resource management and innovative consumption and production practices.
Collaboration lies at the heart of the UAE's efforts to advance the circular economy, with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment working closely with federal and government entities through the UAE's Circular Economy Council. Together, they aim to bolster private sector engagement and amplify initiatives such as the 'Scale 360' initiative, where the UAE stands as the inaugural global signatory.
Looking ahead, reducing plastic imports, production, and usage stands as a paramount objective for both the Circular Economy Council and the Ministry. H.E. Al Dahak reiterated the critical importance of raising public awareness about responsible plastic usage, asserting that it forms a cornerstone of broader efforts to foster environmental consciousness and promote eco-friendly practices across society.
In conclusion, H.E. Al Dahak emphasized that enhancing environmental sustainability is integral to achieving the UAE's climate goals and ensuring a resilient future for the nation. By fostering collaboration and driving innovation, the UAE remains steadfast in its commitment to combating plastic pollution and safeguarding the planet for generations to come.
