Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has brought together prominent cultural figures to explore the role of loyalty and belonging in shaping national identity, as part of its ongoing Library Talks series under the School of Life initiative.

The session, titled “The Culture of Loyalty and Belonging,” was held at Etihad Museum and reflects the Authority’s continued efforts to strengthen community connections and foster a deeper sense of belonging among residents and citizens.

The discussion featured a distinguished panel including Maryam Sultan Lootah, Assistant Professor of Political Science at United Arab Emirates University; Mohammed Saeed Harib, creator of the popular animated series Freej; Shaikha Al Muteiri, Secretary General of the Emirates Writers Union; and Rafia Ghubash, founder of the Women’s Museum.

The session focused on how loyalty and belonging are expressed through everyday behaviours and attitudes, emphasizing their importance in fostering trust, stability, and social cohesion. Speakers highlighted that these values are not abstract concepts but are reflected in daily interactions and community engagement.

Participants also stressed the growing importance of societal awareness, particularly in distinguishing between accurate information and misinformation, as part of strengthening collective responsibility.

A key highlight of the discussion was how cultural storytelling contributes to national identity. Mohammed Saeed Harib shared insights into how Freej captures Emirati traditions and values, positioning it as a cultural touchstone that resonates across generations.

The session also underscored how authentic cultural expression, including literature and poetry, plays a vital role in shaping a positive image of the nation. Audience engagement formed an integral part of the event, with attendees participating in discussions and reciting patriotic poetry.

The Library Talks series continues to serve as a platform connecting creatives with the wider community, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global cultural hub and a centre for creativity and talent development.
