Dubai Culture Launches ‘Open the Chest’ to Revive Emirati Values and Strengthen Family Bonds Among Future Generations
Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has launched the children’s book “Open the Chest” in collaboration with Elf Publishing House and Emirati designer and writer Shatha Essa, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen cultural identity and foster creativity among younger generations.
The publication celebrates authentic Emirati customs, traditions, and family values while supporting Dubai Culture’s “Al Wulfa” season initiative, which focuses on reinforcing family ties and highlighting Emirati social and cultural occasions. The initiative aligns with the Authority’s vision of delivering innovative cultural experiences for families and youth while empowering local talent and supporting the growth of Dubai’s cultural and creative industries.
The launch event took place at Al Safa Art and Design Library and was attended by Shaima Rashid Al Suwaidi and Ahlam Blouki. The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Latifa Al Shamsi, where Shatha Essa discussed her literary journey and creative development.
As part of the celebrations, the author also hosted a reading session at the Emirates Literature Foundation, drawing a large audience of children who participated in interactive activities inspired by the story. The activities included crafting treasure chests using origami and decorating them with keepsakes linked to the narrative, creating an atmosphere of imagination, fun, and discovery.
The story follows a young boy named Mohammed, who discovers a glowing chest in his garden and embarks on a journey to find its key. Guided by his grandmother’s wisdom, he learns that the true key lies in love, family connections, and shared memories. The story concludes with Mohammed opening the chest alongside his family, filling the surroundings with light and warmth while revealing the importance of togetherness.
The book also highlights significant Emirati cultural occasions, including “Haq Al Laila,” the spirit of Ramadan, and Eid celebrations, combining educational and entertaining elements to preserve and pass on local heritage to younger generations in a modern and engaging way.
Speaking about the initiative, Shaima Rashid Al Suwaidi emphasized the importance of heritage-inspired publications in strengthening children’s connection to their roots and national identity. She noted that “Open the Chest” transforms Emirati customs and values into interactive storytelling experiences that resonate with young readers while reflecting the principles of “reflection, connection, and blessing” promoted by the “Al Wulfa” season.
Al Suwaidi added that the project reflects Dubai Culture’s commitment to supporting Emirati creatives and introducing heritage through contemporary storytelling methods that align with the evolving creative and digital landscape.
Meanwhile, Ahlam Blouki highlighted the growing importance of cultural representation in children’s literature, describing the book as a heartfelt narrative that reinforces family values and connection. She praised Shatha Essa’s storytelling talent and the illustrations by Lamtara Art Production for enriching the visual and emotional appeal of the publication.
For her part, Shatha Essa explained that the idea behind “Open the Chest” was inspired by her desire to present Emirati heritage and memories in a language accessible to children. She described the chest as a symbol of treasured memories and meaningful emotions, while Mohammed’s journey reflects childhood curiosity and the grandmother symbolizes wisdom and continuity.
She also expressed appreciation for Dubai Culture’s support in bringing the project to life and helping create an interactive cultural experience that strengthens belonging and shared family memories among children.
