du and Omantel Activate Oman Emirates Gateway Subsea Cable to Boost Regional Digital Connectivity
du, a leading UAE telecom and digital services provider, and Omantel, Oman’s premier integrated telecommunications provider, have jointly announced the activation of the Oman Emirates Gateway (OEG)—a cutting-edge 275-kilometer fibre optic submarine cable system designed to strengthen digital infrastructure and interconnectivity between the UAE and the Sultanate of Oman.
This strategic deployment links three major international data centers:
-
data mean DX1 in Dubai, UAE
-
Equinix MC1 in Barka, Oman
-
Equinix SN1 in Salalah, Oman
Powering a New Era of Digital Infrastructure
The OEG submarine cable is set to transform the region’s digital landscape by enabling high-speed, resilient, and scalable cross-border connectivity. The system is purpose-built to meet the rising demands of hyperscalers, content providers, and global telecom carriers, offering a direct, low-latency route for data transmission across the Gulf.
Karim Benkirane, Chief Commercial Officer of du, highlighted the strategic impact of the initiative:
“The Oman Emirates Gateway is far more than just an optical cable; it is a bridge towards future-proofing the digital infrastructure of the region. This project will be a cornerstone for hyperscalers and global carriers, empowering them to optimize operations and expand across the UAE and Oman.”
Enhancing Digital Transformation Across Borders
With dual route resilience—combining terrestrial and subsea pathways—the OEG project ensures unmatched reliability and robust performance. Its infrastructure supports next-generation technologies, including AI, 5G, and IoT, while offering faster access to cloud services and seamless international data exchange.
Samy Al Ghassany, Chief Technology and Digital Officer at Omantel, stated:
“The activation of the Oman Emirates Gateway marks a pivotal milestone in our digital transformation journey. This high-capacity corridor enriches regional content and enhances global competitiveness by driving innovation and business growth in Oman and the UAE.”
Strategic Impact for the Region
The launch of OEG not only bolsters telecommunications capabilities but also positions both du and Omantel as leading wholesale infrastructure players in the Middle East. It reflects a shared vision to attract global tech leaders, hyperscalers, and enterprises while fostering economic advancement and digital inclusion.
This initiative supports the UAE’s and Oman’s aspirations to become global digital hubs, enabling seamless international business operations and fostering regional technological innovation.
