DEWA to complete second phase of SCADA system to monitor and control water network

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is about to complete phase two of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system at its Sustainable Building in Al Quoz. The project supports the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart, integrated, and connected city that is sustainable with its resources. It also attains its strategy to create a smart and effective infrastructure and adopt the finest practices for enhancing customer service standards. The SCADA centre will monitor and control the water distribution network in Dubai, covering a distance of over 2,500 km as well as several pumping stations and reservoirs.

The project depends on advanced technologies, including a backbone network of fibre optics to transmit digital information in addition to a wireless communications network that links over 450 Remote Terminal Units (RTU) with the SCADA system enabling the measurement of various data in the network.

The centre supports our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, mainly that it will ensure the highest international standards in water network monitoring and control. It will deliver world-class services to meet all customer requirements. We are dedicated to providing safe and stable supplies of electricity and water to the maximum levels of quality. The SCADA system in the Sustainable Building in Al Quoz demonstrates our firm commitment to taking a leading position and achieving the highest levels of efficiency, reliability and excellence in our operations, said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Al Tayer noted that during the second phase, DEWA will operate a new emergency control centre, the SCADA Emergency Centre, which is a water management system that is connected with the SCADA system round the clock, and a simulation system to train operating staff and engineers to manage the system to the highest level of efficiency.

DEWA has been continuously upgrading its infrastructure with a particular focus on improving customer service and enhancing operational efficiency. The new control centre will play a key role in strengthening DEWAs capabilities to advance monitoring and quick response to any emergencies that might affect our system throughout the Emirate. It will ensure that our systems work in accordance with the maximum quality levels to ensure an uninterrupted supply of water, added Al Tayer.
