DCT Abu Dhabi signs agreement to introduce Seaglider coastal transport by 2028
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) and VERSA Advanced Maritime Services, has signed a strategic agreement to explore the introduction of Seaglider operations across the emirate by 2028.
The agreement aims to enhance coastal transportation and connectivity through the adoption of advanced, environmentally friendly mobility solutions. Initial plans will focus on developing routes between Abu Dhabi City and the Al Dhafra Region, with potential expansion across the wider emirate and the UAE at later stages.
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Abu Dhabi’s transportation infrastructure while supporting economic growth, tourism development and environmental sustainability. The initiative is expected to contribute to improved connectivity for residents and visitors, while aligning with national innovation and sustainability objectives.
Seagliders are fully electric, zero-emission Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect vessels that operate just above the sea surface, enabling high-speed travel with significantly reduced environmental impact. VERSA Advanced Maritime Services, the UAE’s first Seaglider operator, has been developing the concept since 2022, with commercial operations planned to begin in 2028.
Under the agreement, the partners will conduct feasibility studies and market assessments covering operational, commercial and environmental considerations. They will also evaluate potential operational models, including routes and schedules, in line with Abu Dhabi’s broader tourism and mobility strategies.
His Excellency Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, said the initiative supports the emirate’s vision for smart, sustainable mobility solutions that enhance quality of life and visitor experiences while reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a global hub for innovation.
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), noted that the agreement represents an important step towards expanding integrated, low-emission transport options across land, air and sea, while ensuring safety, efficiency and seamless connectivity.
Sheikha Alyazia Bint Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairperson and Owner of VERSA Advanced Maritime Services, said the partnership marks a milestone in transforming innovative transport concepts into practical infrastructure that supports sustainable national development.
The initiative supports DCT Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030, which focuses on sustainable growth, strategic investment and the continued development of world-class tourism and mobility infrastructure across the emirate.
