Dubai’s AI driven signal tech slashes delays by up to 37%

In a significant leap toward smarter mobility, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled an upgraded central traffic signal control system, delivering impressive improvements in travel efficiency.
The enhanced system has already boosted travel speeds at major intersections across the city, reducing journey times by 16% to 37%. This enhancement reinforces Dubai’s ambition to become a global smart city leader and highlights RTA’s commitment to blending technology with urban mobility.
At the core of the new system is UTC-UX Fusion, a next generation traffic signal platform harnessing artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and digital twin technologies. These advanced tools enable real time analysis, allowing traffic signals to anticipate and adapt to changing traffic flows, significantly reducing unnecessary waiting times and smoothing out congestion.
Moreover, the digital twin component empowers the RTA to simulate and test signal timing scenarios virtually before rolling them out live, ensuring minimal disruption and optimized traffic response. The system also supports future infrastructure like V2X (Vehicle to Everything) communication, enabling connected vehicles and signals to interact smoothly in real time.
Additionally, the system’s AI driven dynamic control ensures priority access during peak hours for public transport and emergency vehicles, enhancing both efficiency and safety.
With a phased rollout underway, the RTA expects the upgraded signal system to cover all major intersections by mid 2026, scaling the efficiency gains city wide. This technological evolution in Dubai's traffic management isn’t just about reducing red light waits, it’s reshaping urban mobility. By merging AI intelligence with real world infrastructure, the city continues its journey toward smarter, safer, and more sustainable transit.
