Dubai's New Airport First Phase to Be Ready by 2032, Capacity Set for 150 Million Passengers
Dubai's ambitious Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) project has reached a significant milestone, with officials confirming that the first phase will be completed by 2032 and will have the capacity to handle 150 million passengers annually.
The announcement was made by Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, during The Airport Show. Once operational, the airport will gradually begin taking over flight operations from Dubai International Airport (DXB) as part of Dubai's long-term aviation expansion strategy.
Dh1 Billion Contract Awarded for Second Runway
As part of the development plans, a Dh1-billion contract has been awarded for the construction of a second runway at DWC. Officials confirmed that enabling works, valued at Dh75 million, are already underway, marking the initial stage of the project.
Al Zaffin stated that design and construction activities are progressing according to schedule, with discussions continuing with contractors to ensure timely delivery.
Designed to Be the World's Most Futuristic Airport
According to officials, the new airport is being developed as a technological marvel, incorporating advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance passenger experience.
The airport's layout will feature a large central terminal connected to multiple concourses, allowing smoother passenger movement. Previous plans revealed that the facility could eventually operate as eight smaller interconnected airports, creating a more personalized travel experience.
A Destination Beyond Travel
Beyond transportation, DWC is being designed as a destination in its own right. The airport will include extensive retail outlets, duty-free shopping, entertainment zones, and immersive experiences aimed at transforming the passenger journey.
Concept designs showcased features such as robotic baggage handling, advanced passenger services, and innovative baggage claim systems.
Long-Term Expansion Plans
Upon full completion, Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to become the world's largest airport, with the capacity to handle 260 million passengers annually and process 12 million tonnes of cargo each year.
The airport will span approximately 70 square kilometres, making it around five times larger than DXB. Plans include two passenger terminals, seven concourses, and more than 400 aircraft gates.
AI and Smart Border Technology
Technology will play a central role in airport operations. Officials said AI-powered systems will manage gate allocation and optimize passenger transfers by positioning connecting flights closer together.
Dubai authorities are also exploring a future borderless airport experience, where travelers could move through immigration and customs using advanced smart corridor technologies. While the concept remains under development, it reflects Dubai's vision of creating one of the world's most efficient and technologically advanced aviation hubs.
