Dubai's nol Card to Support Bank Cards and Digital Wallets as RTA Completes 72% of Payment Upgrade

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 72% of the upgrade to its nol payment system, paving the way for a more seamless and fully digital public transport experience. The project, scheduled for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2027, will enable commuters to pay fares using bank cards, digital wallets, QR codes, and next-generation nol cards.

The upgraded system marks a significant step in Dubai's transition towards a cashless transport network, with payment services digitally linked to customer accounts and aligned with international standards.

The transformation will begin with the introduction of QR code ticketing through digital channels, offering passengers a faster and more convenient way to access public transport services across the emirate.

The second phase will see the rollout of a new generation of nol cards equipped with advanced technology compatible with global banking standards. These cards will automatically link to customers' digital accounts upon activation.

The final phase will enable commuters to pay fares directly using bank cards and digital wallets, eliminating the need to rely solely on traditional transport cards.

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the upgrade forms a key part of the authority's broader digital transformation strategy.

He said the project represents a strategic investment in the future of digital services and will create a unified payment ecosystem that integrates multiple transport modes while improving operational efficiency and customer convenience.

Al Tayer added that the initiative supports Dubai's vision of leveraging advanced technologies to simplify government services, enhance customer experiences, and strengthen the emirate's position as one of the world's leading smart cities.

The upgraded nol system will introduce a range of new features designed to enhance convenience for users. Customers will be able to create personalised accounts, link multiple nol cards—including those of family members—manage user profiles, activate automatic top-ups through linked bank accounts, and view detailed transaction histories.

The system will also allow users to block lost cards, recover remaining balances, purchase QR code tickets through digital channels, and benefit from more flexible fare structures across different public transport services.

Beyond public transport, the enhanced nol platform will expand its role as an everyday digital payment solution, enabling wider use across retail outlets and other service sectors, making it function more like a bank card.

Originally launched on September 9, 2009, alongside the opening of the Dubai Metro, the nol card has evolved into one of Dubai's most widely used mobility payment solutions. Over the years, it has expanded to include student discounts, tourist packages, e-scooter payments, and a growing range of smart mobility services.

The latest upgrade further supports the Dubai Cashless Strategy and reinforces the emirate's ambition to build a fully integrated, digitally connected transport ecosystem.
