Dubai Creek’s Underwater Walkway: A Free and Convenient Route for Pedestrians
The Al Shindagha pedestrian tunnel offers a unique and free-of-cost way for residents and visitors to cross Dubai Creek on foot, connecting the historic districts of Bur Dubai and Deira. While many opt for roads, water taxis, abras, the metro, or the Infinity Bridge, this lesser-known walkway provides a quick, safe, and scenic pedestrian route beneath the waters of Dubai Creek.
A Hidden Yet Efficient Connection
Located just a few minutes from the Al Shindagha Museum’s parking area, the tunnel remains relatively unknown due to the lack of extensive signage. A small signboard marks its entrance, leading pedestrians down well-lit slopes with handrails. As users descend, they reach the long, flat stretch of walkway at the tunnel’s deepest point.
According to regular user Wajahat Shoukat, the tunnel has been a convenient route for nearly a year, particularly on weekends. "I love the convenience, but not many people know about this," he said.
A Quick and Comfortable Walk
Spanning a seven-minute walk, the tunnel provides easy access to some of Dubai’s most famous landmarks, including the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira. Many residents use this pedestrian-friendly route to avoid heavy traffic and the harsh summer sun.
For daily commuter Zain Sardar, the tunnel helps save up to 30 minutes of travel time. "I park my car in Al Shindagha and take the pedestrian underpass to Deira. It hardly takes five to seven minutes," he explained.
A Fitness-Friendly Route for Pedestrians
The Al Shindagha pedestrian tunnel is gaining popularity among residents who incorporate it into their daily fitness routines. Many find it a great way to stay active while enjoying Dubai’s urban scenery.
"This tunnel has become part of my evening walk. Walking from Shindagha to Deira is refreshing, and it’s a fantastic way to stay fit while experiencing the vibrant souk atmosphere," said Mathul Mathews, a business development manager. He believes that the tunnel promotes sustainable travel, encourages walking, and reduces traffic congestion in the city.
A Unique Journey Beneath Dubai Creek
More than just a shortcut, the tunnel serves as a symbolic bridge between Dubai’s past and present. With its distinctive brown color and well-maintained structure, the walkway is monitored 24/7 by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
Strict regulations ensure a safe and clean environment inside the tunnel. Activities such as cycling, smoking, eating, sleeping, playing, or spitting are prohibited. CCTV cameras and megaphones are installed at key points, allowing security personnel to monitor activity and communicate with pedestrians when needed.
For long-term Dubai resident Rameez Raja, using the tunnel is a nostalgic experience. "It’s not just a shortcut. It connects two worlds and reminds me of Dubai’s growth from its roots," he said.
With its efficiency, convenience, and cultural significance, the Al Shindagha pedestrian tunnel continues to be a hidden gem for Dubai’s pedestrians, offering a safe, free, and environmentally friendly alternative to crossing Dubai Creek.
