UN General Assembly appoints Dr Tuka Alhanai to Independent International Scientific Panel on AI
The United Nations General Assembly has appointed Dr Tuka Alhanai, Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi, to the newly established Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The United Arab Emirates welcomed the appointment, describing it as recognition of Emirati expertise in advanced technologies and global AI governance.
Among two Arab representatives
Dr Alhanai is one of two representatives from the Arab region among the 40 members selected to serve on the high-level panel. The body will provide independent, multidisciplinary scientific assessments to inform global deliberations on the opportunities, risks and societal impacts of artificial intelligence.
The panel is expected to support evidence-based policymaking as AI continues to reshape economies, governance models and labour markets worldwide.
Expert in human and computational intelligence
Dr Alhanai is an engineer, scientist and researcher working at the intersection of human intelligence and computational systems. Her research focuses on developing AI technologies that enhance human capabilities while maintaining ethical and responsible deployment standards.
Her contributions have earned multiple national and international accolades, including the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 MENA award, recognising leading young innovators across the Middle East and North Africa.
The appointment underscores the UAE’s growing role in shaping international dialogue around responsible AI development, scientific collaboration, and global digital governance.
